30 May 2024; MEMO: The Slovenian government on Thursday approved a decision to recognise an independent Palestinian state, Prime Minister Robert Golob said, following in the recent footsteps of Spain, Ireland and Norway, Reuters has reported. Golob made his announcement at a news conference in Ljubljana.

OBREZJE, Slovenia, Oct 21 (Reuters) - Slovenia on Saturday deployed police on border crossings with Croatia and Hungary to prevent potential security threats, leading to queues as travellers waited to have their documents checked.

The Slovenian government had on Friday decided to introduce temporary border controls until Oct. 30, following its neighbour Italy which introduced controls on its border crossing with Slovenia to improve home security.

LJUBLJANA, Slovenia (AP) — European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited Slovenia on Wednesday and promised EU help to the small member state which was ravaged by recent floods that killed at least six people and caused extensive damage.

Von der Leyen said after meeting with Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob that they discussed a package of “three components” designed to provide immediate financial aid but also mid and long-term support for reconstruction.

LJUBLJANA, Aug 8 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — Clean-up operations in Slovenia were in full flow Saturday after torrential rains and severe floods brought havoc to the Alpine country in its worst natural disaster since independence, officials said.

As heavy rainfall started to ease, with the weather situation gradually normalising, the extent of the damage caused by the devastating floods was being assessed.

KAMNIK, Slovenia Aug 4 (Reuters) - At least two people died as torrential rains hit northern and western Slovenia on Friday, causing floods, cutting power and disrupting traffic.

Two men from the Netherlands died, possibly after being hit by lightning, Slovenian press agency STA reported. The Dutch government confirmed the deaths but not the cause.

An elderly Slovenian woman also died during the storm, though authorities were still looking into the circumstances, STA added.

LJUBLJANA, April 26 (Xinhua) -- An exhibition on a Slovenian scientist who spent most of his working years in China opened in Ljubljana on Wednesday.

The exhibition on Ferdinand Augustin Hallerstein was opened by Slovenian President Natasa Pirc Musar, who said that Hallerstein "was an important scientist who connected European and Chinese knowledge."

LJUBLJANA, Oct 24 (NNN-XINHUA) – Slovenia is to hold the second round of the presidential election on Nov 13, after no candidate got a majority in the first round, held yesterday.

The two best positioned candidates, Anze Logar, a member of parliament of the opposition centre-right Slovenian Democratic Party, and independent candidate, lawyer, Natasa Pirc Musar, will compete in the second round.

Though the presidency is largely ceremonial in Slovenia, Sunday’s vote is still seen as a test for its liberal government amid a soaring crisis fueled by the war in Ukraine.

LJUBLJANA, May 13 (NNN-AGENCIES) – Six people died in an explosion in a chemical factory in southern Slovenia, national TV channel, TV Slovenia reported yesterday.

It said, the accident, which occurred in Kocevje, about 63 km south-east of the capital Ljubljana, is the biggest industrial accident in the country, since Slovenia’s independence in 1991.

The accident was likely caused by a human error, as two chemicals were mixed together causing the explosion, followed by a large fire, local media reported.

LJUBLJANA, Slovenia (AP) — Only a few months ago, Robert Golob was virtually unknown in politics, didn’t belong to any party, but had a clear goal: to remove Slovenian right-wing populist Prime Minister Janez Jansa from power and stop a democratic backslide in the tiny Alpine state.

On Sunday, the Freedom Movement, a liberal green party formed by Golob only in January, won Slovenia’s general election, more than 10 percentage points ahead of Jansa’s Slovenian Democratic party as people turned out massively to vote for change.
