Singapore: Lee To Be Made Senior Minister In New Cabinet

SINGAPORE, April 16 (Bernama) — Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will remain in the new Cabinet as a senior minister, local media reported, quoting Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on Tuesday.

The Straits Times reported that Wong, who is set to assume the role of Singapore’s Prime Minister from Lee on May 15, will announce details of his new Cabinet in a press conference a few days before the swearing-in ceremony.

Israeli embassy in Singapore forced to take down 'insensitive' Facebook post

Singapore, Mar 25 (PTI) An "insensitive" post by the Embassy of Israel here that tried to make a political point citing the holy Quran has been taken down after the intervention by the government of Singapore.

The post on the Facebook page was made on Sunday.

Former Singapore Transport Minister Faces Eight New Charges

SINGAPORE, Mac 25 (NNN-XINHUA) – Former Singapore transport minister, S. Iswaran, was charged in the State Courts with eight additional counts of obtaining valuable things, as a public servant, according to a statement issued by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB), today.

Iswaran received valuables with a total value of nearly 19,000 Singapore dollars (14,000 U.S. dollars) from businessman, Lum Kok Seng, between Nov, 2021 and Nov, 2022, the CPIB noted.

Indian charged with illegally exporting over 5,000 terrapins from Singapore

Singapore, Mar 20 (PTI) An Indian national was charged in a Singapore court on Wednesday with packing more than 5,000 wild turtles into his suitcases and transporting them from Singapore to India last year.

Rafique Syed Hariza Ali Hussain, 40, was handed one charge each under the Wildlife Act and the Animals and Birds Act for allegedly exporting 5,160 red-eared sliders, known commonly as terrapins, from the Changi Airport here to the Coimbatore International Airport in Tamil Nadu on November 7, 2023, Channel News Asia reported.

Singapore minister charged with corruption in rare case

SINGAPORE, Jan 18 (Reuters) - Singapore's former Transport Minister S. Iswaran has been charged in court for graft, the anti-corruption agency said on Thursday, in one of the most high-profile graft cases involving a minister in the Asian financial hub in decades.

The Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB), in a statement, said Iswaran, who was arrested in July last year, is alleged to have obtained kickbacks valued at S$384,340.98 ($286,181) from property tycoon Ong Beng Seng, partly to advance Ong's business interests.

Singaporean PM calls for full support for new leadership in 2024

Singapore Flight Returned After Receiving Bomb Threat

SINGAPORE, Oct 13 (NNN-XINHUA) – A Scoot flight, scheduled for Perth, Australia, returned to Singapore Changi Airport yesterday evening, due to a bomb threat after takeoff, local media reported.

A spokesperson for the airline told local media that, the plane departed at 4:11 p.m. and turned back about one hour into the flight, due to a bomb threat.

The aircraft landed in Singapore at 6:27 p.m., and security checks were carried out, the spokesperson added.

Singaporean Air Force sent fighter jets to escort the Scoot flight back to Changi.

Singapore: China climate envoy says phasing out fossil fuels 'unrealistic'

SINGAPORE, Sept 22 (Reuters) - The complete phasing-out of fossil fuels is not realistic, China's top climate official said, adding that these climate-warming fuels must continue to play a vital role in maintaining global energy security.

China is the world's biggest consumer of fossil fuels including coal and oil, and its special climate envoy Xie Zhenhua was responding to comments by ambassadors at a forum in Beijing on Thursday ahead of the COP28 climate meeting in Dubai in November. Reuters obtained a copy of text of Xie's speech, and a video recording of the meeting.

Tharman Shanmugaratnam sworn in as Singapore's president

SINGAPORE, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Tharman Shanmugaratnam took the oath as Singapore's ninth president at Istana, the country's presidential palace, Thursday evening.

In the inauguration speech, Tharman said he was honored and humbled to have been elected and will discharge his duties diligently and faithfully.

The president also stressed building a more inclusive society and deepening Singapore's partnerships with the international community.

China-Singapore Joint Exercise Kicked Off

SINGAPORE, Sept 7 (NNN-XINHUA) – The bilateral training exercise between the Chinese People’s Liberation Army and the Singapore Armed Forces, kicked off at the Jurong Camp here yesterday, focusing on urban counter-terrorism operations.

Over 280 elite military personnel from both armies will perform equipment operations, small-arms live firing, real force counter-terrorism drills and command post exercise, during the event.

Commanders from both task forces agreed that the joint exercise would improve mutual trust and enhance friendship.
