Thane, Jun 22 (PT) A case of rape has been registered against a man for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh in Murbad in Maharashtra after offering her a job, police said Saturday.
According to police, the accused Nirmal Verma became acquainted with the girl after he foiled her bid to commit suicide by jumping onto the railway tracks in her village in Pratapgarh district of Uttar Pradesh some time back and brought her to Murbad in Thane district.
A police official said the girl wanted to end her life as she was fed up with frequent quarrels in her family back home.
Verma, who hails from the same village as of the girl, subsequently brought her to Dhanivali in Murbad to stay with him, he said.
The girl started working as a domestic help and has been staying with Verma in a chawl.
Police said Verma allegedly forced himself on the girl on June 13 and repeated the act several times.
As per a complaint lodged by the victim, police have booked Verma under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Police are yet to make any arrest.
Further investigation is underway.
