RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- The Brazilian government released on Friday an official statement expressing its worry over an escalation of tensions in Syria.
According to the statement, published by the country's foreign ministry, the Brazilian government is following the recent escalation of tensions in Syria's northeastern region "with great concern."
"The Brazilian government urges all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint and to cease military activities in order to safeguard the integrity of the civilian population and infrastructure and to ensure full, unrestricted and secure access to humanitarian aid in the region," said the statement.
In addition, the government called for a political resolution.
"The Brazilian government reaffirms that the only way to end the conflict in Syria is by political means, with full respect for the UN Charter, international law, Syrian unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and in strict compliance with the relevant resolutions of the Security Council," the government stated.
The Brazilian Foreign Ministry said it is in regular contact with the Brazilian community in Syria and stressed that consular offices are at the community's disposal.
