KATHMANDU, Feb 20 (NNN-NEPALNEWS) – The Nepali army decided to clean six mountain peaks in the country, including Mount Qomolangma, starting April 13 this year, the Nepali Army said here yesterday.
The national defence force of Nepal has announced to collect 35 tonnes of garbage from the peaks of these mountains.
Led by the Nepali Army, the Sherpa mountaineers will support the 54-day long cleaning drive, that will conclude on June 5, on the occasion of the World Environment Day.
“There will be 43 climbers from the Nepali Army, along with Sherpa mountaineers and other guides,” Brigadier General, Shanttosh Ballave Poudyal, a Nepal Army spokesperson, said, yesterday. “The cleaning will be done at the base and above, in all the mountains.”
Poudyal said, the non biodegradable garbage will be ferried to Kathmandu via helicopters and other vehicles, after segregation, and that will be handed over to the recycling plants. An estimated 1.07 million U.S. dollars will be spent, on the mountain cleaning campaign.
“The team to be mobilised in the cleaning campaign is taking training in the Nepali army’s training centre, in Jomsom of Mustang district,” he said.
