WASHINGTON, Dec 31 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — US President Joe Biden offered pardons, for the third time this year, to several people prosecuted for drug or alcohol-related crimes.
Biden offered clemency to six men convicted of drug and alcohol trafficking, as well as to a woman sentenced decades ago for killing her husband.
Beverly Ann Ibn-Tamas, 80, was 33 years old and pregnant when her husband physically and verbally abused and assaulted her moments before she shot him.
The White House noted that during her trial, the court did not allow an expert to testify about the effects of domestic violence.
Ibn-Tamas was convicted of second-degree murder, and her case has been studied as an example of battered woman syndrome.
‘President Biden believes that offering meaningful opportunities for redemption and rehabilitation empowers those who have been incarcerated to become productive members of society,’ a White House official said.
Previously, the president pardoned three people in April, as well as thousands in October who were sentenced for marijuana possession.
