Hanoi, March 1 : North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attended a formal welcome ceremony in Hanoi on Friday afternoon, commencing his official friendly visit to Vietnam scheduled for March 1-2.
Chairman Kim was warmly welcomed by Vietnamese Party General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong at the Presidential Palace at 3:30 pm.
This is his first official friendly visit to Vietnam after he assumed his post in 2011.
It also marks a historic milestone in the two nations’ relationship, taking place 61 years after North Korea’s former leader Kim Il Sung’s first visit to Vietnam in 1958.
Vietnam and North Korea established their diplomatic ties on January 31, 1950 and will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the relationship in 2020.
The North Korean leader will meet Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan at around 5:00 pm the same day.
Chairman Kim left Pyongyang on his train on Saturday last week and arrived at the Dong Dang Railway Station in the northern Vietnamese province of Lang Son on Tuesday morning, before heading to Hanoi by car.
He has been staying at the Melia Hotel in the Vietnamese capital for meetings with President Donald Trump during the second U.S.-North Korea Summit, held eight months after they first met in Singapore in June 2018.
