India: Kejriwal, Sisodia on 2-day Gujarat visit from today

Ahmedabad, Aug 22 (PTI) Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia will visit Gujarat for two days from Monday during which they will address a gathering and hold discussions on employment and education with youth ahead of the state Assembly polls due later this year.

Kejriwal, the national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party and Sisodia, who is the education minister of Delhi, will meet people in Himmatnagar and Bhavnagar, Gujarat AAP's general secretary Manoj Sorathiya said in a video statement.

India: Expose BJP attempts to topple Kejriwal government: NCP

New Delhi, Aug 23 (PTI) The Sharad Pawar-led NCP on Tuesday asked the AAP to expose the BJP's attempts to topple the Delhi government by releasing the purported recording of the offer made to Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.

Sisodia had claimed that BJP had offered to make him the Delhi Chief Minister and drop all cases against him if he joined the saffron party.

NCP spokesman Clyde Crasto said claims of such offers from the BJP, if true, were dangerous for democracy in India.

India: SC strikes down 2016 provision of 1988 Benami law

New Delhi, Aug 23 (PTI) The Supreme Court Tuesday struck down one of the provisions of the Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Act of 1988, which provides for the punishment of a maximum jail term of three years or a fine or both for those indulging in benami' transactions.

The apex court termed the provision unconstitutional on the ground of being manifestly arbitrary .

"We hold section 3(2) of the Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Act, 1988 as unconstitutional," a bench comprising Chief Justice N V Ramana and Justices C T Ravikumar and Hima Kohli said.

New Delhi, Aug 22 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over multiple drug hauls from Gujarat and asked for how long he would be silent on the matter.

His attack came days after the Anti Narcotics Cell (ANC) of Mumbai Police busted a mephedrone manufacturing unit in Gujarat and seized drugs worth Rs 1,026 crore.

New Delhi, Aug 21 (PTI) Former Lok Sabha member and prominent OBC leader Haribhau Rathod is all set to join the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday.

Rathod, who was the Lok Sabha member of the BJP from Yavatmal in Maharashtra, told PTI that he would join the AAP on Sunday in the presence of the party's National Convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

India: No plans to import wheat: Govt sources

New Delhi, Aug 21 (PTI) The government has no plans to import wheat as it has sufficient stocks to meet the country's requirements, official sources said.

The Food Corporation of India (FCI) has enough stock for public distribution, they added.

"There are no plans to import wheat into India. The country has sufficient stocks to meet our domestic requirements," a source said.

India: Poll schedule to elect new Cong chief gets underway

New Delhi, Aug 21 (PTI) The process for the election of Congress president got underway on Sunday, with the party's election authority saying it would stick to the schedule of electing a new chief by September 20.

Chairman of the party's Central Election Authority Madhusudan Mistry told PTI that it was up to the Congress Working Committee (CWC) to approve the final date for the election of the Congress chief, which could be any day between August 21 to September 20.

India: Nitish was uncomfortable with BJP: Prashant Kishor

New Delhi, Aug 10 (PTI) Poll strategist Prashant Kishor on Wednesday said Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was not comfortable in the alliance with the BJP and that is why he moved from one political formation to the other.

Kishor, once considered a close confidant of Kumar, said the impact of the political developments in Bihar will remain limited to the state at present.

They were unlikely to have an impact on the national level in the short-run, he said.
