India: Editor's Guild condemns Zubair's arrest

New Delhi, Jun 28 (PTI) The Editors Guild of India on Tuesday termed as "extremely disturbing" the arrest of AltNews co-founder Muhammad Zubair on charges of hurting religious sentiments, and demanded his immediate release.

"It is apparent that AltNews' alert vigilance was resented by those who use disinformation as a tool to polarise society and rake nationalist sentiments," the Guild said in a statement here.

India: Yashwant Sinha files nomination for prez poll

New Delhi, Jun 27 (PTI) Opposition presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha on Monday filed his nomination papers for the July 18 election, with a host of leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, Akhilesh Yadav and Farooq Abdullah accompanying him.

Significantly, TRS leader K T Rama Rao, the son of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao was also present when Sinha filed his papers.

Ahmedabad, Jun 24 (PTI) Tanvir Jafri, son of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, on Friday said he was disappointed by the Supreme Court's verdict dismissing a petition challenging the clean chit given by the SIT to then chief minister Narendra Modi and others in 2002 post-Godhra riots cases.

India: Pleas against Agnipath scheme: Centre files caveat in SC

New Delhi, Jun 21 (PTI) The Centre has filed a caveat in the Supreme Court and urged that it be heard before the court passes any order on petitions against the Agnipath scheme.

The Agnipath scheme, announced on June 14, provides for the recruitment of youths between the age bracket of 17.5 to 21 for four years with the provision to retain 25 per cent of them for 15 more years. Protests have erupted in several states against the scheme.

India: No purchase of coal from Russia after April 20: Tata Steel

New Delhi, Jun 22 (PTI) Tata Steel has not made any purchase of PCI coal from Russia post its April announcement of severing business ties with Russia amid the ongoing conflict with Ukraine, a company spokesperson said on Wednesday.

On April 20, Tata Steel had said it would stop doing business with Russia. To ensure business continuity, all its steel manufacturing sites in India, the UK and the Netherlands have sourced alternative supplies of raw materials to end its dependence on Russia.

India: PM Modi will have to withdraw 'Agnipath' scheme: Rahul

New Delhi, Jun 22 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday alleged that the Centre was "weakening" the army through the 'Agnipath' scheme, and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi will have to withdraw the military recruitment initiative just like the farm laws were rolled back.

The former Congress chief also thanked party workers for their support during his questioning by the Enforcement Directorate in the National Herald case, and said he was not alone during the questioning but all those fighting for democracy were with him.

Indian Govt asks employees to opt for lowest air fare, book tickets 21-days before travel

New Delhi, Jun 19 (PTI) The Finance Ministry has asked government employees to opt for 'cheapest fare available' on their entitled travel class and book air tickets at least three weeks prior to their date of travel for tours and LTC, as it looks to cut down on unnecessary expenditure.

The Ministry further said that employees should book only one ticket for each leg of intended travel, make bookings even if approval of the tour programme is under process and also avoid "unnecessary cancellations".

Indian man kills wife for not serving food, sleeps with corpse

New Delhi, Jun 18 (PTI) A man allegedly killed his wife following an argument that erupted as she refused to serve him food after both of them had alcohol together and later slept with the body not realising that she was dead, police said on Saturday.

The next morning, upon realising that he had killed his wife, the man fled with over Rs 40,000 cash. He was, however, tracked down and arrested from another location in Delhi, they said.
