'No time to waste on Brexit': EU uneasy about Truss as UK leader

PARIS/LONDON/BERLIN, Sept 2 (Reuters) - Europe is anticipating the prospect of Liz Truss as Britain's next prime minister with a mixture of irritation and unease: diplomats say that with the war in Ukraine and rampant inflation, the last thing they need is another Brexit battle.

Frontrunner in a ruling Conservative party contest to succeed Boris Johnson, Truss has few admirers across the 27-nation European Union to start with.

France: IAEA mission arrives in Zaporozhye, AFP reports

PARIS, August 31. /TASS/: The International Atomic Energy Agency's mission, on its way to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, has arrived in the city of Zaporozhye, AFP reported on Wednesday.

On Monday, the IAEA’s mission left Vienna and arrived in Kiev on Tuesday where the delegation met Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. UN officials told TASS on Monday that the mission would arrive at the nuclear facility via Kiev and the Ukrainian-controlled territory.

France accuses Russia over gas supply as Nord Stream shutdown looms

PARIS, Aug 30 (Reuters) - France accused Moscow on Tuesday of using energy supplies as "a weapon of war" after Russia's Gazprom (GAZP.MM) cut deliveries to a major French customer and said it would shut its main gas pipeline to Germany for three days this week.

European governments are trying to coordinate a response to soaring energy costs for businesses and households and to fill storage facilities ahead of peak demand in the winter.

France detects bird flu at duck farm

PARIS, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- The highly pathogenic bird flu, avian influenza, has been detected in a duck farm in France's eastern department of Ain, causing a total of 10,600 ducks culled, French daily news Le Figaro reported on Sunday.

The State services (departmental directorate for the protection of populations) of Ain have highlighted an outbreak of avian influenza due to a strain of the H5N1 virus in a duck farm located in Saint-Nizier-le-Desert, Le Figaro reported, citing the prefecture of the Ain department.

Nuclear deal on table with Iran better than no deal - Macron

27 August 2022; MEMO: French President, Emmanuel Macron, said on Friday the ball was in Iran's court to revive a nuclear deal with world powers, and that the offer on the table, even if it would not resolve all differences, was better than no offer at all, Reuters reports.

Iran received Washington's response to an EU-drafted final offer for salvaging the 2015 deal, the Foreign Ministry in Tehran said on Wednesday, giving no firm indication of how close remaining gaps were to being narrowed.

France, Algeria to set up joint historian committee on French colonial rule, Macron says

PARIS, Aug 25 (Reuters) - French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday he wanted to build the future of Franco-Algerian relations by confronting a painful colonial past but also by focusing on future challenges.

"We have a complex, painful common past. And it has at times prevented us from looking at the future," Macron said after meeting with Algeria President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on the first of a three-day visit to the North African country. 

Energy crisis deepens in Europe as extreme drought hits electricity output

PARIS, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- High temperatures and drought have deepened the energy crisis in Europe this summer, affecting electricity production at a time when the European economies are already facing unprecedentedly high oil and gas prices.

In France, Europe's largest producer of nuclear power, several plants along the Rhone and Garonne were forced to reduce output because river temperatures were too high to cool the plants. This further reduced the power supply after the shutdown of a dozen of the country's 56 nuclear plants for planned maintenance.

The world’s cotton supply is shrinking hit by drought and heat

PARIS, Aug 21 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Extreme weather is wreaking havoc upon virtually all of the world’s largest cotton suppliers.

In India, the top-producing country, heavy rains and pests have cut into cotton crops so much that the nation is importing supplies. A heat wave in China is raising concerns about the upcoming harvest there.

French President Macron to travel to Algeria on Aug. 25

PARIS, Aug 20(Reuters) - French President Emmanuel Macron is planning to travel to Algeria next week, the Elysee palace announced on Saturday, saying that the official visit will take place from Aug.25-27.

Macron accepted an invitation by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, his office said. It will be Macron's second official visit to the North African country which holds close business ties with Paris.
