Kuwait anti-corruption body to investigate resignations in Finance Ministry

30 Oct 2020; MEMO: Kuwait’s Anti-Corruption Authority (Nazaha) will investigate the recent collective resignations of a number of employees at the Ministry of Finance in protest of violations committed by Finance Minister, Barak Ali Al-Sheetan, local media reported.

Informed sources said the ministry’s undersecretary, Saleh Al-Sara’awi, and five assistants submitted their resignations yesterday hours after submitting an official complaint against a ministerial decision to rotate a number of senior employees.

Kuwait continues to support Palestinian cause

21 Oct 2020; MEMO: The prime minister of Kuwait has insisted that his country is continuing to support the Palestinian cause. “This is our central cause,” Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah told fellow parliamentarians. “We affirm that we stand on the Palestinian people’s side for the sake of reaching a just solution to the cause.”

Kuwait offers $1.2m to support East Jerusalem hospitals

12 Oct 2020; MEMO: Palestinian Prime Minister, Muhammad Shtayyeh, yesterday announced that Kuwait has offered $1.2 million in financial support for Palestinian hospitals in East Jerusalem through the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (AFESD).

Shtayyeh said the offer is part of a financial aid package worth $5.7 million designated to projects in the occupied city.

The Al-Maqasid Charity Hospital, Augusta Victoria (Al-Mutlaa) Hospital and St. John Eye Hospital will benefit from the Kuwaiti funds.

Kuwait’s parliament approves Sheikh Mishaal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah as crown prince

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 9 (NNN-AGENCIES) – Kuwaiti National Assembly (parliament) approved Sheikh Mishaal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah as crown prince, Kuwait News Agency said.

Sheikh Mishaal, 80, has been deputy chief of the Kuwait National Guard since 2004, largely staying out of the political scene and away from disputes within the royal family. 

The Sabah ruling family “blessed” 83-year-old Sheikh Nawaf’s decision, the official Kuwait News Agency said Wednesday, a day ahead of a parliamentary session to approve the choice. 

Kuwait's new emir meets senior U.S., Iranian officials

KUWAIT (Reuters) - Kuwait’s new Emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah met on Sunday with senior U.S. and Iranian officials who separately paid respects over the death of the Gulf Arab state’s former ruler.

Sheikh Nawaf assumed power after the death last Tuesday of his brother Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad. The late emir balanced his nation’s ties between larger neighbours Saudi Arabia and Iran and kept a strong relationship with the United States, which led a coalition that ended Iraq’s 1990-91 occupation of Kuwait.

Kuwait Names Crown Prince As New Emir

KUWAIT, Sept 30 (NNN-KUNA) – Kuwaiti Crown Prince, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, yesterday, was named the new Emir, after the death of the late Emir, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

The government prays for the success of the new ruler, in his efforts to ensure the security and growth of the country, Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister, Anas Al-Saleh, said in a statement.

Sheikh Nawaf was born on June 25, 1937. He had served as the minister of interior from 1978 to 1988, when he was appointed as minister of defence.

Kuwait imports more than 6.6bn cigarettes per year

29 Sep 2020; MEMO: The cigarette market in Kuwait has significantly increased over the past few years with more than 6.6 billion consumed annually, London based Global Data consulting firm said.

The company said the tobacco market in Kuwait grew 298.3 per cent in 2017 compared to the early 1990s.

In 2017, the average annual consumption of cigarettes in Kuwait was 2,315, with an average of six cigarettes per day.

Kuwait Launches Mass Beach Campaign To Mark World Clean-up Day

KUWAIT, Sept 20 (NNN-XINHUA) – Kuwait launched yesterday, a mass campaign to mark World Clean-up Day by promoting the culture of cleaning the environment in Kuwaiti society.

The cleanup campaign at the beach in Jahra Governorate, which attracted more than 5,000 participants, was the first of its kind in Kuwait on the occasion of World Clean-up Day, and will enhance Kuwait’s environmental position internationally, according to the organiser, Sheikha Intisar Salem Al-Ali Al-Sabah, chief of Alnowair, a non-profit initiative, dedicated to promoting a positive attitude in Kuwait.

Kuwait suspends 7 judges over possible link to money laundering network

27 Aug 2020; MEMO: The Supreme Judicial Council of Kuwait has suspended seven judges and referred them for investigation over their potential association to a money laundering network run by the Iranian citizen, Fuad Salehi.

Al-Qabas newspaper quoted an informed source as saying that five out of the seven judges work in the court of first instance while two judges work in the court of appeals, noting that the investigations did not reveal any mobile messages between them and Salehi.
