7 killed in car ramming incident in southern Nigeria

LAGOS, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people were killed and 29 others injured after a car rammed into a crowd of people at a carnival gathering in southern Nigeria's Cross River state on Tuesday, an official said.

The accident happened during the annual Calabar Carnival, a large street party in the state capital city of Calabar, when a Toyota Camry car lost control and rammed into the crowd of onlookers, Maikano Hassan, head of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Cross River state, told Xinhua on the phone.

China-aided ECOWAS headquarters begins construction

Nigeria confirms resumption of passenger train service suspended following attack

ABUJA, Dec 3 (NNN-Xinhua) — The Nigerian government has announced that passenger train service between the capital city Abuja and the northern city Kaduna would resume early next week, about eight months after it was suspended after an attack on a train along the route at the end of March.

Fidet Okhiria, managing director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, told a press conference that passengers wishing to utilize the service will be able to purchase their tickets within a few days.

Nigerian president reiterates support for stability in West Africa

ABUJA, Nov 29 (NNN-Xinhua) — Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari reiterated the country’s commitment to bolstering peace, security, and political stability in West African countries.

Efforts are being made by the leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to restore order in Mali, Guinea, and Burkina Faso, the president said at the opening of the 2nd Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS parliament.

Chinese company hands over Nigeria's first deep sea port

LAGOS, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- China Harbor Engineering Company Ltd (CHEC) on Monday handed over Nigeria's first deep sea port to the government after the completion of the huge maritime project in the country's economic hub city of Lagos.

Flood death toll exceeds 500 in Nigeria this year

LAGOS, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- More than 500 people have been killed and 1,546 others injured this year in Nigeria due to heavy rains and floods, an official said Tuesday.

Floods have so far wreaked havoc in 31 states and the Federal Capital Territory, affecting over 1.4 million people and dislocating 790,254, said Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development.
