LAGOS, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Dubai's Emirates plans to reduce flights to Nigeria this month due to troubles repatriating revenue from Africa's most populous nation, according to a letter sent to the government and seen by Reuters.

Emirates plans to cut the number of flights to Lagos to seven from 11 by mid-August, the letter said, adding it had $85 million stuck in the country as of July, a figure that had been rising by $10 million per month.

LAGOS, July 23 (Reuters) - The European Union is seeking additional gas supplies from Nigeria as the bloc prepares for potential Russian supply cuts, Matthew Baldwin, deputy director general of the European Commission's energy department, said on Saturday.

Baldwin was speaking in Nigeria where he held meetings with officials from Africa's largest oil producer this week.

He was told that Nigeria was improving security in the Niger Delta and planned to re-open the Trans Niger pipeline after August, which would yield more gas exports to Europe.

LAGOS, July 11 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from Friday's boat capsize in Lagos, Nigeria's economic hub, rose to 15 as more bodies were recovered, authorities said.

Recovery operation were still ongoing, Ibrahim Farinloye, zonal coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency in the southwestern region, said in a statement on Sunday.

LAGOS, Jul 10 (NNN-NAN) – At least two people were killed, when a boat carrying 16 people capsized in Lagos, on Friday afternoon, Nigerian authorities announced yesterday.

At the time of the accident, the boat was travelling along a waterway in the Ojo area of Lagos, when “the tide of the water drifted the boat to a stationary barge, which caused it to overturn,” said Ibrahim Farinloye, the zonal coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in the south-western region, in a statement.

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for an attack on a prison in Nigeria’s capital which freed nearly 900 inmates including 60 of its members.

Nigerian security forces on Thursday continued to search for at least 400 escaped prisoners who are still at large.

While Nigeria has suffered multiple jailbreaks in recent years, the attack on Tuesday night was the first in the nation’s capital within that period — a development that analysts say points to a “failure of intelligence.”

ABUJA, July 6 (Xinhua) -- At least 300 inmates were on the run while one inmate died and three others were injured during an attack on Tuesday by unidentified gunmen on a prison in Abuja, Nigeria's capital city, a senior official said on Wednesday.

The attackers stormed the custodial center in Kuja area, southwest of Abuja on Tuesday night, freeing about 600 inmates but half the number of fleeing inmates have been re-arrested so far, said Shuaibu Begore, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Interior.

ABUJA, April 14 (Reuters) - Nigeria will next year conduct its first census in 17 years to try to accurately survey its population, estimated at more than 200 million people and the largest in Africa, the head of the national population agency said on Thursday.

Censuses are controversial in Nigeria because rival ethnic and religious groups have in the past tried to use them to assert their numerical superiority and claim a larger share of oil revenues and political representation.

The Ukrainian troops told him they were only letting pregnant woman on the service from the city of Lviv to the Polish border, but he said he saw them stop some pregnant African women from getting on board.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the majority of the affected Nigerian citizens are currently taking refuge in Poland, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia.
