India: 8 Apache attack helicopters to be inducted into IAF at Pathankot

Pathankot, Sep 2 (PTI) In a major boost to the Indian Air Force's combat capabilities, eight US-made Apache AH-64E attack helicopters are set to be inducted into the IAF on September 3, officials said on Monday.

Air Chief Marshal B S Dhanoa will be the chief guest during the induction ceremony, which will take place at the Pathankot Air Force station.

The AH-64E Apache is one of the world's most advanced multi-role combat helicopters and is flown by the US Army.

India: Dalits protest demolition of Delhi's Ravidas temple

Phagwara, Aug 15 (PTI) Members of the Dalit community here on Thursday took out a protest march against the demolition of the Guru Ravidas temple in New Delhi's Tughlakabad area on the apex court order.

They demanded the reallotment of the land for the reconstruction of the temple.

Carrying black flags and banners, they first assembled at the PWD rest house here and then took out a protest march on the national highway, before converging on the sugar mill chowk.

India: Punjab Chief Minister's wife duped of Rs 23 lakh

Chandigarh, Aug 7 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh's wife Preneet Kaur fell prey to a cyber fraud, losing Rs 23 lakh to a scamster who duped her through a mobile phone call, posing as a bank manager, said police.

Also a Congress MP from Patiala, Kaur was duped a few days back, said police on Wednesday, adding the scamster, however, has been arrested.

A team of Punjab police arrested the fraudster after tracing his phone call to Ranchi in Jharkhand, said officials .

India: Two groups clashed in Punjab; 3 injured

Amritsar (Punjab), Aug 2 (PTI) Three persons were injured after gunshots were fired in a clash between two groups here on Friday, police said.

The clash occurred after some animals belonging to a volunteer group entered the fields owned by Sikh seminary Damdami Taksal, the police said.

Members of the seminary asked the other group to move the animals out of the agricultural fields. However, they refused and this led to the clash, an officer said

India: 28 cattle die of suspected food poisoning in Mohali

Chandigarh, Jul 29 (PTI) At least 28 cattle have died after consuming stale, leftover food of hotels and restaurants in Punjab's Mohali, officials said on Monday.

Though dairy farmers have claimed that more than 90 buffaloes and cows have died in the past four days at Mohali's Kandala and Shafipur villages, the district authorities have pegged the death count to 28.

Mohali Deputy Commissioner Girish Dayalan has marked an inquiry into the incident to his Additional Deputy Commissioner and sought a report within three days.

India: Punjab CM accepts Navjot Sidhu's resignation

Chandigarh, July 20 (PTI) Days after Navjot Singh Sidhu resigned from the state cabinet, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh Saturday accepted his "one-line" resignation.

The chief minister has sent the resignation to Governor V P Singh Badnore for formal acceptance, an official spokesperson said here.

Amarinder, who had been indisposed for the last two days, since arrival from Delhi on Wednesday, saw the resignation letter Saturday morning, the spokesperson said.

India: Kathua rape case: HC issues notices to J&K, convicts

Chandigarh, Jul 18 (PTI) The Punjab and Haryana High Court Thursday issued notices to the Jammu and Kashmir government and six men convicted in the case of rape and murder of an eight-year-old nomadic girl in Kathua on a plea by her father seeking enhanced punishment for them.

The court also issued a notice to the accused who was acquitted in the case by a lower court.

India: Navjot Singh Sidhu resigns as Punjab Cabinet Minister

Chandigarh, Jul 14 (PTI) Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, who has been at loggerheads with Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and was stripped off key portfolios in the cabinet reshuffle in June, has resigned from the state cabinet.

The 55-year-old Sidhu took to Twitter on Sunday, making public his resignation letter, which was sent just four days after his portfolio was changed.

The resignation letter dated June 10 was addressed to Congress President Rahul Gandhi.

India: Honey Singh booked for 'vulgar' lyrics in his new song

Chandigarh, Jul 9 (PTI) Pop singer Honey Singh and music producer Bhushan Kumar have been booked by Punjab police on the charge of using vulgar lyrics against women in their latest song.

The rapper has been booked following a complaint lodged by the Punjab State Women Commission which sought action against him for allegedly using vulgar lyrics against women in the song.

The case has been registered at the Mataur police station in Punjab's Mohali district.

Indian honour killing: Two murdered in Amritsar

Amritsar, Jun 27 (PTI) In a suspected case of honour killing, a minor girl and her lover were murdered here, police said Thursday.

Police said the incident took place Wednesday at Majitha village, 20 km away from Amritsar.

The girl's father, brother and four others have been booked in the case.

Police said the 18-year-old youth was allegedly attacked with daggers near his house and was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead.

Police said before murdering the youth, the accused allegedly killed the 15-year-old girl.
