African Union chairperson condemns killing of Palestinians seeking food aid in Gaza

02 March 2024; MEMO: Chairperson of African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat has “strongly” condemned the recent Israeli attack in which scores of Palestinians were killed trying to access food aid in Gaza on Thursday, Anadolu reports.

In a statement on Friday, the chairperson called for an international investigation into the incident to bring the perpetrators to account.

Ethiopian gov't, UNICEF ink accord to foster strategic refugee response collaboration

ADDIS ABABA, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- The Ethiopian government and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) have signed a cooperation agreement to strengthen strategic collaboration pertaining to refugees and Ethiopian returnees.

The memorandum of understanding agreement (MOU), which was signed between the Ethiopian Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS) and UNICEF, envisaged strengthening the two sides' collaboration in protecting and supporting refugees and Ethiopian returnees in the country, according to a joint press statement issued late Friday.

Cholera outbreak in eastern Ethiopia kills 23

ADDIS ABABA, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Save the Children, a global charity organization, said Thursday that a cholera outbreak in Ethiopia's eastern Somali region has killed at least 23 people.

The charity said in a press release that a new cholera outbreak in the Somali region has resulted in 772 confirmed cases and 23 deaths in only two weeks.

"A deadly combination of flooded water systems, a lack of basic sanitation services and damaged water treatment plants has driven the spike in the deadly illness," the statement said.

Red Sea: Ethiopia “will not assert its interests through war”, assures PM Abiy Ahmed

ADDIS ABABA, Oct 27 (NNN-AFRICANEWS) — Ethiopia has no intention of invading another country and “will never assert its interests through war”, assured its Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Thursday, a few days after a speech that raised concerns about Addis Ababa’s possible claims to the Red Sea.

In a televised speech on Oct 13, Abiy said that “Ethiopia’s existence as a nation is linked to the Red Sea”, that his country needed a port, and that “peace” in the region depended on “balanced mutual sharing” between landlocked Ethiopia and its neighbors.

African Union Chair 'fully supports' UN Chief on Palestine

27 October 2023; MEMO: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission gave his full support, Thursday, to the UN Chief, for Antonio Guterres’s “principled position and leadership” amid criticism for remarks on Israel’s military actions in Gaza at the Security Council, Anadolu Agency reports.

"I fully support the principled position and leadership of @antonioguterres and the work of the @UN in the Occupied Palestinian Territories" Moussa Faki Mahamat wrote on X.

WFP appeals for more funding to meet humanitarian needs in Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) said that a funding shortfall is hampering its humanitarian response in Ethiopia.

"WFP is facing a funding shortfall of 219 million U.S. dollars until the end of the year. In effect, WFP has reprioritized 50 percent of the targeted beneficiaries under its nutrition activity," the WFP said in its latest Ethiopia humanitarian situation report issued late Thursday.

Ethiopia has faced conflict, displacement, and drought over the past few years, worsening food insecurity in the East African country.

Bombing of hospital: African Union chief accuses Israel of war crimes in Gaza: Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA, Oct 18 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The African Union chief Moussa Faki Mahamat accused Israel of a “war crime” following the deadly strike on a hospital in the Gaza strip on Tuesday.

   “There are no words to fully express our condemnation of Israel’s bombing of a #Gaza hospital today, killing hundreds of people,” Faki said on X, formerly Twitter, calling for the international community to act.

   The health ministry in the Hamas-run Palestinian territory said Israeli air strikes on the hospital compound sheltering displaced people had killed at least 200 people.
