UN General Assembly elects 5 non-permanent members to UN Security Council

06 June 2024; MEMO: The UN General Assembly, on Thursday, elected five non-permanent members to the UN Security Council (UNSC) for the 2025-2026 term.

Somalia, Pakistan, Panama, Greece and Denmark won elections at the General Assembly.

Somalia received 179 votes, Pakistan 182, Panama 183, Greece 182 and Denmark 184, meeting the criterion of obtaining two-thirds of the votes to replace Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland.

UN adds Israel to blacklist for harming children in conflict zones

US urges UN Security Council to back Israel-Hamas ceasefire plan

UNITED NATIONS, June 4 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The United States announced a draft Security Council resolution supporting the Israel-Hamas ceasefire plan outlined by US Pres Joe Biden last week, urging Hamas to accept it.

“Numerous leaders and governments, including in the region, have endorsed this plan,” said US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

The draft text “welcomes the new deal announced on May 31, and calls upon Hamas to accept it fully and implement its terms without delay and without condition.”

UN is moving to blacklist Israel: Channel 13

USA: Police arrest pro-Palestine protesters at Columbia University

Tehran, IRNA — Over 100 pro-Palestinian protesters have been arrested on the campus of New York’s Columbia University as police cleared an encampment set up by students demonstrating against Israel’s war on Gaza, media outlets have reported.

Several students involved in the protest said they were also suspended from Columbia University and its associate institution, Barnard College. They include Isra Hirsi, who is the daughter of Ilhan Omar, a Democrat in the United States House of Representatives, Al Jazeera reported on Friday.

US blocks Security Council resolution granting full UN membership to Palestine

UNITED NATIONS, APRIL 19. /TASS/. The United States exercised its veto right to block a UN Security Council resolution granting full UN membership to Palestine, a TASS correspondent reported.

A total of 12 countries, including Russia and China, voted in favor of the document, while two countries — Switzerland and the United Kingdom — abstained. The United States was the only country that voted against the proposed resolution.
