US investigates origins of novel coronavirus pandemic — Trump

WASHINGTON, April 18. /TASS/: The United States has been looking into the origins of the novel coronavirus pandemic and the pathogen itself, US President Donald Trump told reporters in the White House.

"We are looking out at it, a lot of people are looking out at it. It seems, it makes sense," he said.

World economy bound to suffer 'severe recession': IMF

Washington, Apr 18 (PTI) The world economy, already "sluggish" before the coronavirus outbreak, is now bound to suffer a "severe recession" in 2020, IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva has warned and said the current crisis posed "daunting challenges" for policymakers in many emerging markets and developing economies.

Addressing the Development Committee Meeting during the annual Spring Meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, the IMF Managing Director said a large global contraction in the first half of this year was inevitable.

Around 1,200 Cuban doctors fight pandemic worldwide

HAVANA, April 18 (NNN-Prensa Latina) — About 1,200 Cuban health professionals have joined the battle against Covid-19 around the globe, Bruno Rodriguez, minister of Foreign Affairs, said.

On his Twitter account, Bruno Rodriguez posted that 21 medical brigades have taken Cuban solidarity to Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America and the Caribbean, in times of pandemic.

On Thursday, Cuba´s Foreign Ministry stated that this country has responded to medical assistance requests without evaluating political differences or economic advantages.

Many migrants on US deportation flight had coronavirus, Guatemalan President says

GUATEMALA CITY, April 18 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei said a large number of migrants on a deportation flight to Guatemala from the United States this week were infected with the coronavirus, adding that US authorities had confirmed a dozen cases.

Giammattei said 12 randomly selected people on the deportation flight tested positive for coronavirus when examined by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

He suggested more on the flight had tested positive as well.

Global virus deaths pass 150,000 as Trump endorses lockdown protests

IMF, World Bank disburse funds to help countries battle pandemic

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank are providing emergency funds to developing and low-income countries across the world to strengthen their efforts to battle the rapidly spreading coronavirus.

Following is a list of countries slated to receive funds from the two institutions’ emergency facilities, or as augmentation of existing programs, sorted by region:

U.S. announces $19 billion coronavirus aid for farmers, food buys for poor

CHICAGO (Reuters) - President Donald Trump on Friday announced a $19 billion relief program to help U.S. farmers cope with the impact of the coronavirus, including $16 billion in direct payments to producers and mass purchases of meat, dairy, vegetables and other products.

The U.S. Agriculture Department is partnering with regional and local distributors to purchase $3 billion in such farm goods to be distributed to food banks, churches and aid groups as millions of Americans face unemployment with much of the economy shut down.

Trump's coronavirus reopening plan has big holes, health experts say

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The U.S. economy has imploded in the past month amid aggressive measures to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, with 22 million people filing for unemployment benefits and most factories, stores and other businesses at a virtual standstill.

The governors of Michigan, Florida and other states outlined tentative steps on Friday to reopen their economies, a day after the White House issued guidelines to help states decide when to lift lockdown orders and allow firms to restart and workers to return to their jobs.
