Chile’s APEC cancellation raises new hurdle for US-China trade deal

WASHINGTON, Oct 31 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Leaders from the United States and China encountered a new obstacle in their struggle to end a damaging trade war, when the summit where they were supposed to meet was cancelled because of violent protests.

U.S. President Donald Trump said he hoped to sign an interim trade deal with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping during the Nov 16-17 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Chile. Chilean officials said they cancelled the summit to focus on restoring law and order in the country.

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- The situation in Burundi remained tense in the past four months, said Michel Kafando, the UN secretary-general's special envoy for Burundi, on Wednesday.

"It is important to note that in many respects, the situation in Burundi remains tense. During the period under consideration (between June 14 and Oct. 15, 2019), there has been an increase in political intolerance and infringement upon civic and political freedoms," Kafando told the UN Security Council in a briefing.

Pentagon releases new details on al-Baghdadi raid

WASHINGTON (AP) — The general who oversaw the U.S. raid on Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi provided the most detailed account yet of the operation Wednesday and said the U.S. is on alert for possible “retribution attacks” by extremists.

Gen. Kenneth “Frank” McKenzie, head of U.S. Central Command, said al-Baghdadi’s remains were buried at sea within 24 hours of his death inside an underground tunnel where he fled as special operations soldiers closed in on him.

Bolton won’t testify without subpoena

Former National Security Adviser John Bolton is not agreeing to a voluntarily interview in the impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump.

The House committees leading the impeachment investigation have asked Bolton to appear behind closed doors next week. But Bolton’s lawyer, Charles Cooper, says Bolton will not appear without a subpoena.

Democrats have issued subpoenas to several other witnesses who ended up testifying.

Disabled seniors in Ca. complex left behind during outage

NOVATO, Calif. (AP) — One woman in her 80s tripped over another resident who had fallen on the landing in a steep stairwell. Others got turned around, even in their own apartments, and cried out for help.

At least 20 seniors with wheelchairs and walkers were essentially trapped, in the dark, in a low-income apartment complex in Northern California during a two-day power shut-off aimed at warding off wildfires.
