College student wanted in 2 Connecticut slayings is captured

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A college student sought by police as a suspect in a crime spree including two slayings in Connecticut has been captured in Maryland, police said Wednesday night.

Peter Manfredonia, 23, had been the subject of a six-day search involving several police agencies and the FBI.

He was found in the area of a truck stop in Hagerstown, Maryland. He was not injured and no officers were hurt during the arrest, Connecticut State Police said.

US can arrange nuclear test within months if necessary, Pentagon says

WASHINGTON, May 27. /TASS/: The United States will be ready to hold a nuclear test within a few months if ordered so by the country’s president, the Defense News portal said citing Drew Walter, who is performing the duties of deputy assistant secretary of defense for nuclear matters.

The official said that, in his opinion, a nuclear test "would happen relatively rapidly," possibly "within months" if ordered by the president for technical or geopolitical reasons.

Pentagon says about 14 Russian-made warplanes could be on Libya’s territory

WASHINGTON, May 27. /TASS/: At least 14 Russian-made military planes could be on the territory of Libya, Chief Pentagon Spokesperson for the Department of Defense Jonathan Hoffman told reporters.

"With regard to the number and types of aircraft <…> it was approximately 14 military fighters, a mix of Su-24s and MiG-29s. Right now, that’s all the information on that that I can share with you," he said, answering to a question about the number of Russian-made aircraft that could possibly be in Libya.

G7 summit to be held in late June: White House

WASHINGTON, May 26 (Xinhua) -- White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said on Tuesday that the Group of Seven (G7) Summit was planned to be held at the White House near the end of June.

"The President thinks no greater example of reopening in this transition to greatness would be the G7, and the G7 happening here and happening probably more towards the end of June," McEnany told reporters at a White House briefing.

"So far, foreign leaders are very much on board with the idea," she said, adding that the White House would be the preferred venue for the summit.

Trump committed to July 4 celebration despite lawmaker alarm

USA: Rubio warns of foreign actors amplifying virus conspiracies

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Marco Rubio, the new Republican chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, is warning that foreign actors will seek to amplify conspiracy theories about the coronavirus and find new ways to interfere in the 2020 presidential election.

The Florida Republican said in an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday that one possibility could be an effort to convince people that a new vaccine against the virus, once created, would be more harmful than helpful.

Deadlocked Congress shifts virus focus to small business aid

WASHINGTON (AP) — Deadlocked over the next big coronavirus relief bill, Congress is shifting its attention to a more modest overhaul of small business aid in hopes of helping employers reopen shops and survive the pandemic.

Bipartisan legislation that would give small employers more time to take advantage of federal subsidies for payroll and other costs is expected to pass the House this week, as lawmakers return to Washington for an abbreviated two-day session.
