Experts scramble, but new virus vaccine may not come in time

WASHINGTON (AP) — The flu-like virus that exploded from China has researchers worldwide once again scrambling to find a vaccine against a surprise health threat, with no guarantee one will arrive in time.

Just days after Chinese scientists shared the genetic map of the culprit coronavirus, researchers at the U.S. National Institutes of Health had engineered a possible key ingredient for a vaccine they hope to begin testing by April.

US Congresswoman Tlaib wears Palestinian dress to Trump’s speech

Tlaib, the first Palestinian-American woman to be elected to Congress, published a photo of herself dressed in a white thobe before entering the Congress Hall on Tuesday.

US expresses concern over religious freedom in India

Washington, Feb 6 (PTI) The US has expressed concern over the current situation of religious freedom in India and raised the issue with Indian officials, a senior State Department official has said.

The remarks came in the wake of widespread protests held across India against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The senior State Department official, on condition of anonymity, said that he has met with officials in India about what is taking place in the nation and expressed concern.

Another batch of female Pak Army officers joins UN peacekeeping mission in D.R. Congo

UNITED NATIONS, Feb 06 (APP): A Pakistan Army’s second Female Engagement Team (FET) has joined the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), according to a message received at UN Headquarters in New York.

The group comprises 21 officers and includes vocational training officers, psychologists, doctors, paramedics, operations officers and software engineers.

A team of 15 female officers is already deployed in Adikivu in South Kivu, one the provinces of D.R. Congo, a central African country.

UN envoy urges all-out effort to turn around deteriorating ocean ecosystem

UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- The international community should make every effort to turn around the deteriorating ocean ecosystem, Peter Thomson, United Nations secretary-general's special envoy for the ocean, said on Wednesday.

"The health of the ocean is in decline. And we have to do everything possible to turn that around for obvious reasons," Thomson said while briefing reporters at the UN headquarters on the preparations for the 2020 UN Ocean Conference slated for Lisbon, Portugal, on June 2-6.

Report: At least 138 sent from US to El Salvador were killed

WASHINGTON (AP) — At least 138 people deported to El Salvador from the United States in recent years were subsequently killed, Human Rights Watch says in a report that comes as the Trump administration makes it harder for Central Americans to seek refuge here.

A majority of the deaths documented by Human Rights Watch in the report Wednesday occurred less than a year after the deportees returned to El Salvador; some were within days. The organization also confirmed at least 70 cases of sexual assault or other violence following their arrival in the country.

Vulnerable Democrat Doug Jones votes to convict Trump
