Nigeria launches first national sex offenders register

ABUJA, Nov 26 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Nigeria launched its first national sexual offenders register, setting up a database of those convicted for sexual violence in a move seen as an important step towards clamping down on abuse.

The “Sexual Offender Register” will contain the names of all those prosecuted for sexual violence in Africa’s most populous nation since 2015.

The record will be available online to better help the public, state bodies and police conduct background checks and identify repeat offenders.

Plane crashes into homes in east DR Congo city, killing 29

Goma (DR Congo), Nov 25, AFP/GANASHAKTI: At least 29 people were killed when a small plane crashed after takeoff  into a densely populated area of the city of Goma in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

A survivor among the 19 people -- 17 passengers and two crew members -- who were aboard the plane was taken to hospital along with 16 others injured on the ground, the North Kivu regional government said.

"At this stage, 29 bodies have been found in the rubble," the statement said.

Death toll from Kenyan landslide reaches 43 as rescue efforts continue

NAIROBI, Nov 24 (NNN-Xinhua) — The death toll from landslides that hit villages in northwestern Kenyan county of West Pokot has reached 43 as search and rescue efforts for the missing victims gather pace, local officials confirmed.

“I have received reports from search teams that the death toll has risen to 43,” John Lonyangapuo, the governor of West Pokot County was quoted telling Capital News, a local radio station.

Drills involving Russian, Chinese and South African ships kick off in Cape Town

CAPE TOWN, November 25. /TASS/: The first-ever joint naval drills of Russia, China and South Africa started in southern Africa on Monday. A joint parade of the ship crews from the three countries at the central quay of Cape Town opened the event.

AU to provide 87,000 USD to assist Somalia's flood victims

MOGADISHU, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- The African Union Mission will provide 87,000 U.S. dollars humanitarian assistance to victims of flooding that has wrought havoc in the horn of African State.

African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) said in a statement late Saturday that the money will help populations affected by flooding rebuild their lives amid destruction on farms, houses and roads.

37 confirmed dead in Kenyan landslide: media

NAIROBI, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan officials on Saturday confirmed that 37 people had died as a result of landslides that hit northwestern county of West Pokot following heavy downpour on Friday night, according to local media.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta sent condolences to the bereaved families in a statement, assuring that every missing person will be accounted for and measures put in place to prevent further loss of life.

Zimbabwe: Number of fired doctors surges to 435

HARARE, Nov 23 (NNN-ALLAFRICA) — The number of fired Zimbabwean doctors has surged to 435 doctors in an unprecedented government response to a prolonged industrial action by its hospital staff.

This was revealed at a post-cabinet media briefing, Thursday by Acting Information Minister, Mangaliso Ndlovu who however said the sacked medical practitioners were at liberty to reapply if they still wished to be readmitted into the country’s beleaguered health services sector.
