African students say they faced guns, hostile guards as they fled Ukraine

ABUJA, March 4 (Reuters) - Nigerian medical student Oduola Adebowale said he and some friends were trying to get on a train to flee Ukraine when the soldiers pointed guns at them and ordered them back.

The Ukrainian troops told him they were only letting pregnant woman on the service from the city of Lviv to the Polish border, but he said he saw them stop some pregnant African women from getting on board.

Russia-Ukraine conflict: Pres Buhari approves US$8.5 million to evacuate 5,000 Nigerians from Ukraine

ABUJA, March 3 (NNN-NAN) — President Muhammadu Buhari has approved $8.5 million for the immediate evacuation of about 5,000 Nigerians caught in the Russia – Ukraine war.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the majority of the affected Nigerian citizens are currently taking refuge in Poland, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia.

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, Zubairu Dada, alongside the Humanitarian Minister, Sadiya Farouk, made this known to State House correspondents at the end of the virtual meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

Another report alleges corruption by ex-South African leader

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Another damning report into government corruption in South Africa has recommended further investigations and the possible prosecution of former President Jacob Zuma, current and former cabinet ministers and senior leaders of the ruling African National Congress party for allegedly receiving bribes.

It’s the third report to come from three years of investigations, testimonies and cross-examination of witnesses and whistleblowers. The inquiry has exposed extensive graft under Zuma at the top levels of government in Africa’s most developed economy.

UN says 440 civilians killed in South Sudan clashes

JUBA, March 1 (NNN-AGENCIES) — At least 440 civilians died in fighting between warring groups in southwestern South Sudan between June and September last year, the United Nations said.

   “Grave human rights violations and abuses, including hundreds of killings, were committed against civilians during fighting in Tambura County, Western Equatoria State,” according to a joint report by the United Nations Mission
in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the UN Human Rights Office.

Namibia agrees to send 35-40 cheetahs to India

WINDHOEK, March 1 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Namibia has agreed to translocate 35-40 cheetahs to India over a period of five years.

The agreement was inked after an Indian delegation from the Union Environment Ministry and the Wildlife Institute of India visited Namibia on Feb 22.

“During our talks with Namibian officials, we asked for 35-40 cheetahs over a period of five years. They have agreed to that,” Yadvendradev Jhala, dean of WII, told the Times of India on Feb 26.

Congo recovers mining and oil assets from Israeli billionaire

27 Feb 2022; MEMO: A company controlled by Israeli billionaire Dan Gertler will give control of valuable mining and oil assets back to the Democratic Republic of Congo, the government said on Friday, reported Reuters.

Anti-corruption group Congo is Not for Sale (CNPAV) has previously warned the mineral-rich country would lose out on $1.76 billion in potential royalty payments from copper and cobalt mining deals if officials did not review the contracts with Gertler's group.

Ex-US soldier fined for trying to take gun on plane

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — A retired U.S. Army soldier was fined $400 and given a suspended jail sentence Thursday for attempting to carry a gun and ammunition onto a plane in Zimbabwe.

Retired Sgt. Maj. Ronald Leon Johnson had been held in the renowned Chikurubi Prison for more than a week after he was arrested Feb. 15 at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe Airport in the capital, Harare.

Nigeria MPs want promptly named cabinets to avoid policy delays

ABUJA, Feb 23 (Reuters) - Nigerian lawmakers plan to amend the constitution to compel a new president to nominate the cabinet within a month of taking office, documents showed on Wednesday, to avoid policy delays as the country prepares for elections next year.

President Muhammadu Buhari took five months after he was re-elected to a second term in 2019 to submit cabinet names to parliament for confirmation, a delay that unnerved investors.

Burkina Faso considering 30-month transition following coup, says presidency source

OUAGADOUGOU, Feb 23 (Reuters) - Burkina Faso is considering a 30-month transitional period to elections following a military coup in January, a source at the presidency said on Wednesday after a commission tasked with making proposals handed its report to the ruling junta.

Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Damiba, who ousted President Roch Marc Kabore on Jan. 24, appointed the commission two weeks ago to propose a draft charter and roadmap for the transitional period.
