JNU teachers take out rally against violence

New Delhi, Sep 17 (PTI) Before the Jawaharlal Nehru University administration banned protests and rallies in campus on Monday, the varsity's teachers' association took out a peace march against the incidents of violence.

The march, which was also attended by students and university staffers, started from Ganga Dhaba and culminated at Chandrabhaga Hostel. The teachers and students are also carrying out a night vigil against the attack and the ban imposed by the administration on protests and gatherings.

India's Supreme Court overturns gov't ban on sale of drugs

NEW DELHI, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- India's Supreme Court Monday overturned a government ban on a popular pain killer and two other drugs.

The three medicines, including popular pain killer Saridon, were among 328 drugs banned by the Indian Health Ministry last week, stating there's "no therapeutic justification" for the ingredients and that those could pose risk to people.

Delhi: United Left Panel Sweeps JNUSU Polls

New Delhi, Sept 16; GANASHAKTI: After counting of all 5185 votes, the Left Unity panel has swept the JNUSU polls. The Panel has won all four Central posts by a margin of 1179 votes on the post of President, 1579 on the post of Vice President, 1193 votes on the post of General Secretary and 757 votes on the post of Joint Secretary.

PM Modi turns 68, to celebrate birthday in Varanasi

New Delhi, Sep 17 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will celebrate his 68th birthday on Monday in his parliamentary constituency Varanasi where he will interact with school children.

Modi will reach Narur village this afternoon where he will interact with children of a primary school, which is aided by a non-profit organisation, Room to Read.

Later, at the Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) campus, the prime minister will interact with students of the Kashi Vidyapeeth and the children assisted by them, according to the Prime Minister's Office.

Uber rape case: HC upholds life term of convict

New Delhi, Sep 15 (PTI) Rapes have been on the rise despite stringent new laws on sexual offences against women, the Delhi High Court has observed while upholding the life sentence given to an Uber driver for raping a 25-year-old executive in the cab in 2014.

A bench of Justices S Muralidhar and Vinod Goel noted that the statistics of the National Crime Records Bureau for 2016 show that 38,947 women were raped that year.

4,388 CCTVs installed in Delhi for women safety: Police to HC

New Delhi, Sep 15 (PTI) The Delhi High Court was told by the police Friday that it has installed around 4,388 CCTV cameras in vulnerable areas of the national capital to ensure safety and security of women.

The Delhi Police made the submission in an affidavit filed in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) moved in March this year by some lawyers for safety of women after a few women complained about "urine and semen-filled" balloons allegedly being hurled at them in and around North Campus of Delhi University.

Left leading on all central panel posts in JNU

New Delhi, Sep 16 (PTI) The United Left is leading in all four central panel posts in the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union polls, counting for which is underway.

According to the election committee, after counting 3,281 out of 5185 votes, N Sai Balaji, presidential candidate of the Left is leading with 1,350 votes. Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) candidate Lalit Pandey was at the second position with 605 votes followed by Thallapalli Praveen from BAPSA (Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students Association).

Justice Ranjan Gogoi is Chief Justice of India

New Delhi, Sept 14; GANASHAKTI: JUSTICE RANJAN Gogoi, the most senior judge in the Supreme Court after Chief Justice Dipak Misra, was appointed as the next Chief Justice of India on Thursday.

“The President of India has appointed Justice Ranjan Gogoi as the next Chief Justice of India. He will assume the office of Chief Justice on October 3, 2018 after the retirement of the current Chief Justice, Justice Dipak Misra,” said a press release issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.

Tariff negotiations with US underway: Steel Minister

New Delhi, Sep 14 (PTI) Steel Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh Friday said negotiations are underway with the United States (US) over 25 per cent tariff it had imposed on steel imports.

US President Donald Trump had earlier imposed a 25 per cent import tariff on steel and 10 per cent on aluminium.

However, the minister said there would not be any immediate impact on domestic steel exports as India sends a marginal amount of alloy of its shipment to the US.
