India records over 30,000 COVID-19 cases in single day for first time

New Delhi, July 16 (PTI) COVID-19 cases in India crossed the 30,000 mark in a single day for the first time pushing the tally to 9,68,876 on Thursday, while the death toll climbed to 24,915 with 606 people succumbing to the disease, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

Iraq closes night clubs over coronavirus cases

15 July 2020; MEMO: Iraq’s Ministry of the Interior yesterday announced the closure of all casinos, gambling halls, and nightclubs in the capital Baghdad.

“The ministry’s intelligence agency has carried out a security duty in different parts of Baghdad,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that the security forces had “closed casinos, nightclubs and alcoholic beverages outlets in a number of hotels and lounges across Baghdad.”

India: All Punjab ministers to undergo coronavirus test

Chandigarh, Jul 15 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has advised his cabinet colleagues to undergo test for coronavirus after one of the ministers tested positive for the infection.

All the cabinet ministers will give their samples for testing (coronavirus) today. Their results will come by today evening or tomorrow, Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu told reporters here on Wednesday.

India: Single-day spike of 29,429 COVID-19 cases

New Delhi, July 15(PTI) India registered a record single-day jump of 29,429 COVID-19 cases pushing its tally to 9,36,181 on Wednesday, while the death toll climbed to 24,309 with 582 new fatalities, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The number of recoveries stands at 5,92,031, while there are 3,19,840 active cases of coronavirus infection presently in the country, the updated data at 8 am showed.

"Thus, around 63.24 per cent of patients have recovered so far," an official said. The total number of confirmed cases include foreigners.

India: Jitendra Singh, Ram Madhav in self-quarantine

New Delhi, Jul 14 (PTI) Union minister Jitendra Singh and BJP general secretary Ram Madhav have gone into self-quarantine after party's Jammu and Kashmir unit president Ravinder Raina, who had accompanied them to the residence of a slain party leader, tested positive for coronavirus on Tuesday.

Singh, who is also a party MP from Udhampur, said he has gone into self-quarantine.

India: AP CM announces Rs 15k for last rites of COVID victims

Amaravati, Jul 14 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Tuesday announced Rs 15,000 for the final rites of those who died of COVID-19, a decision taken after the Opposition TDP criticised the government for alleged inhuman handling of bodies of coronavirus victims.

The Chief Minister also warned that the government would take strict action against COVID hospitals if they were found denying medical treatment to patients.

Bahrain adds $470M in coronavirus impact spending to 2020 budget

14 July 2020; MEMO: Bahrain will add around 177 million dinars ($470 million) to its 2020 state budget in emergency spending on fighting the new coronavirus pandemic, state news agency BNA said on Monday, reporting a royal decree.

To this end, $450 million will be taken as a one-time deduction from the Future Generations Fund (FGF), a fund set up in 2006 to reinvest hydrocarbon revenues, and allocated to this year’s state budget, another new decree said.

Mexico tops 35,000 deaths, 4th highest toll

Mexico City, Jul 13 (AP/PTI) Mexican officials say the number of confirmed COVID-19 deaths has passed 35,000, making it the country with the fourth highest total.

A count by Johns Hopkins University has only the United States, Brazil and Britain with more confirmed deaths from the new coronavirus. Sunday's rise to 35,006 confirmed deaths moved Mexico, a country with 130 million inhabitants, past Italy.
