India: Few hours of oxygen supply left, says AMU's hospital

Aligarh (UP), Apr 28 (PTI) AMU's Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday sent out an alert, saying it has not received oxygen cylinders for the past four days and its own plants are running out of liquid oxygen.

The frontline central government hospital in Uttar Pradesh, which is a part of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), has 273 oxygen-dependent patients, including those suffering from COVID-19, officials said.

India: Prohibitory orders in Srinagar as COVID-19 cases soar

Srinagar, Apr 27 (PTI) The Srinagar authorities on Tuesday announced barring assembly of five or more people under Section 144 of the CrPC in view of a massive surge in COVID-19 cases in the city.

"In view of massive spurt in positive cases in District Sringar & after due deliberations, Section 144 CrPC is imposed hereby within the municipal limits of the district to contain further spread of the epidemic. Assembly of five or more persons is banned with immediate effect," Srinagar Deputy Commissioner Aijaz Asad said on Twitter.

India: Senior Congress leader Eknath Gaikwad dies of COVID-19

Mumbai, Apr 28 (PTI) Former Maharashtra minister and senior Congress leader Eknath Gaikwad died of COVID-19 infection here on Wednesday, party sources said.

He was 81.

The former MP, who was the father of Maharashtra School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad, succumbed to the viral infection at a city hospital around 10 am, the sources added.

Eknath Gaikwad had also served as the president of the Mumbai Congress.

India: Former DU professor N K Bhattacharya passes away, daughter dies of Corona

New Delhi, Apr 28 (PTI) Former Delhi University professor and human rights activist N K Bhattacharya has passed away, according to a statement.

He was the convener of Jan Hastakshep, a citizen's forum, based here, the organisation said.

"We lost a great human rights activists and a good human being," the statement issued by Jan Hastakshep said.

The Indian Federation of Trade Unions paid tributes to Bhattacharya and remembered him as a fighter for human rights.

India: Popular Bengali writer Anish Dev dies of Corona

Kolkata, Apr 28 (PTI) Popular Bengali writer Anish Dev died at a city hospital on Wednesday after being infected with COVID-19, family sources said.

Dev, who was on ventilation, died at the age of 70, they said.

He is survived by his wife and daughter.

The writer was admitted to a private hospital after suffering cardiac arrest at home a few days back and was later diagnosed with COVID-19 infection.

Dev, who was on ventilation, died at around 7:10 am.

Born in 1951 in the metropolis Deb started writing at the age of 18.

Millions of Americans are missing second dose of COVID-19 vaccine: U.S. media

WASHINGTON, April 27 (Xinhua) -- More than 5 million Americans, or nearly 8 percent of those who received a first jab of their COVID-19 vaccine, have missed their scheduled second dose, U.S. media reported.

The number of those skipping their important second dose has increased from about 3.4 percent in March, more than double the rate among people who got inoculated in the first several weeks of the nationwide vaccination campaign, CNN reported, citing data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

India adds 323K fresh COVID-19 cases in single day

New Delhi, Apr 27 (PTI) With 323,144 people testing positive for coronavirus infection in a day, India's total tally of COVID-19 cases has climbed to 17,636,307, while the national recovery rate has further dropped to 82.54 per cent, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Tuesday.

The death toll increased to 197,894 with 2,771 daily new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed.

There has been a slight dip in the daily cases as compared to the number of new infections reported in the past few days.
