Wanted Naxal terrorist killed in J'khand

Dumka (Jharkhand), Jan 13 (PTI) A wanted naxalite, carrying a reward of Rs 10 lakh, was killed by security forces in an encounter in Jharkhand's Dumka district on Sunday, police said.

Shahdeo Rai alias Talada was killed in an encounter in the jungles of Shikaripara in Dumka. He was the prime accused in the killing of the then Superintendent of Police, Pakur district, Amarjeet Balihar, in July 2013, Superintendent of Police, Y S Ramesh said.

India: It's a 'sin' to seek votes in name of cows: Kejriwal

Sonipat, Jan 13 (PTI) It is a "sin" to seek votes in the name of cows, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Sunday even as he accused the BJP-led Haryana government of not allocating sufficient funds for cattle fodder.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief visited a cow shelter in Sonipat's village Saidpur.

"It is wrong to seek votes and play politics in the name of cows which is currently happening in the country," Kejriwal said, addressing a gathering in the village.

"I feel, maybe I am wrong, that it is a sin to seek votes in the name of cows," he said.

India: Three held for rape; victim names another eight persons

Hyderabad, Jan 13 (PTI) Three persons have been arrested for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl on multiple occasions over the last four years, the city police said Sunday.

A demonstration was held in the Kamatipura area here Sunday after the girl alleged that apart from the three arrested men, she was sexually exploited by eight others including a `panch' witness.

The police arrested three persons including a relative of the girl on December 31 after she filed a complaint against them.

Indian Citizenship Bill: Protests rage on in Assam

Guwahati, Jan 13 (PTI) Protests continued unabated against the Citizenship Bill across the state on Sunday and over hundred agitators were picked up when they blocked the road to Kaziranga University, where Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal went for its convocation.

While Sonowal was in the 5th Convocation ceremony of the university at Jorhat, over 100 protesters from Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) shouted slogans and showed black flags in front of the main gate.

India: Naxal terrorist arrested from Giridih

Giridih (Jharkhand), Jan 13 (PTI) A Maoist, who came home to observe festival in Chitara village in the district, was arrested on Sunday, police said here.

Yodho Tudu was wanted in the killing of a policeman during an encounter on March 30, 2009 near Merampahari of the district, said Bagodar sub-divisional police officer Binod Mahto.

India to construct 44 'strategically important' roads along China border

New Delhi, Jan 13 (PTI) The government will construct 44 strategic roads along the border with China and over 2100 km of axial and lateral roads in Punjab and Rajasthan, abutting Pakistan, a CPWD document shows.

According to an annual report (2018-19) prepared, and released earlier this month by the Central Public Works Department, the agency has been asked to construct 44 "strategically important" roads along the India-China border to ensure quick mobilisation of troops in case of a conflict.

7 die in mishap on Kanpur-Alld highway

KANPUR: As many as 7 people died and 44 were injured in an accident between truck and roadways on Kanpur-Allahabad highway on Sunday. As the moving truck laden with cement lost its control owing to bursting of its tyre suddenly it collided with a roadways bus of Fatehpur depot approaching from an opposite direction.

The mishap occurred near Mohar village of Chaudagra in Fatehpur. A gypsy car was also crushed herewith. 

UN alarmed by extra-judicial killings in Indian state of Uttar Pradesh

12 Jan 2019; AA: The UN human rights body's experts expressed “alarm” over alleged 59 extra-judicial killings by police in northern Indian state, where many victims belong to Muslim community.

The UN Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner (OHCHR) said in a statement on Friday that its experts have written a letter to the government of India on 15 of the cases in Uttar Pradesh since March 2017.
