India: Maha Cops asked not to collect fine from vehicles carrying migrants

Mumbai, May 14 (PTI) Maharashtra Highway Police have issued an order asking their personnel not to collect fine from vehicles carrying migrant labourers during the lockdown.

Following complaints that some police personnel were collecting money illegally in the guise of fine from such vehicles, the highway police warned that those found indulging in such acts would be terminated from service.

India: MSRTC buses ferry 73,000 migrants in five days

Mumbai, May 13 (PTI) The buses of Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) ferried nearly 73,000 migrant labourers in the last five days, it said on Wednesday.

It operated 1,200 buses on Wednesday and ferried 27,528 migrants, most of whom were on the way to the Maharashtra's borders, heading for northern states.

The MSRTC is offering them free bus ride upto the state borders.

Transport Minister Anil Parab appealed that migrant labourers should travel by MSRTC buses, avoiding risky modes of travel.

India: Cop dies of COVID-19; sixth death in Mumbai police force

Mumbai, May 14 (PTI) A 45-year-old police naik, who had tested positive for COVID-19, succumbed to the infection in neighbouring Navi Mumbai on Thursday, an official said.

The deceased policeman was posted at Shivajinagar police station and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital for the last few days, the official said.

So far, six policemen from Mumbai and one each from Pune, Solapur city and Nashik Rural have died of coronavirus, he said, adding that over 1,000 policemen were infected in Maharashtra.

India: COVID-19 Cases In Mumbai’s Slum Surpasses 1,000

MUMBAI, May 14 (NNN-PTI) – Asia’s largest slum, located in Mumbai, has crossed 1,000 cases of the COVID-19, as per the update shared by the city civic authority on Wednesday.

With 66 fresh cases reported on Wednesday, the total confirmed cases from the slum, spread over 613 hectares and home to some one million people, stood at 1,028 with 40 deaths so far.

India: Jet Airways insolvency resolution professional seeks fresh EoI for defunct airline

Mumbai, May 13 (PTI) Jet Airways insolvency resolution professional on Wednesday invited fresh expressions of interest (EoI) for the grounded airline.

This is the fourth time that EoI has been invited for Jet Airways, which was shuttered last year.

The last date for submission of bid documents is May 28 and the final list of prospective resolution applicants will be issued on June 10, as per a public document.

The decision for issuing fresh EoI was taken during the committee of creditors (CoC) meeting held recently.

India: Man kills self citing loneliness amid lockdown

Mumbai, May 12 (PTI) A 25-year-old man allegedly committed suicide citing loneliness due to the COVID-19 lockdown at Kopar Khairane in neighbouring Navi Mumbai on Tuesday, police said.

Suraj Surve was found hanging from a ceiling fan at his home in sector 4 of Kopar Khairane, an official said.

The deceased was an engineer and was working from home in light of the lockdown, while his family was stuck in their hometown, he said.

India: Sena leader Raut demands special package for Mumbai

Mumbai, May 13 (PTI) Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Wednesday demanded a special package for Mumbai which has become a coronavirus hotspot.

Welcoming the Rs 20 lakh crore package announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Raut demanded that Mumbai get "maximum benefit" from it.

"Workers are leaving as they have no work here.

Mumbai's importance as the country's financial capital should be sustained. The Centre should announce a special package for Mumbai and other cities which create jobs," Raut said.

India: Maharashtra govt to temporarily release 17,000 prisoners

Mumbai, May 12 (PTI) The Maharashtra government has decided to release on temporary parole 17,000 of the total 35,000 inmates lodged across jails in the state to contain the spread of the COVID-19, Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said on Tuesday.

Of these, 5,000 undertrial inmates have already been released.

The governments decision comes close on the heels of 185 inmates at the Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai contracting the viral disease, Deshmukh said.

India: Centre ignoring domestic migrant workers

Mumbai, May 11 (PTI) Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Raut on Monday targeted the Centre for not making sufficient transport facility for migrant labourers to return home in the coronavirus-enforced lockdown but arranging special flights to bring back Indians stranded abroad.

He took potshots, through a cartoon, at the BJP-led government at the Centre over its 'Vande Bharat' mission and wondered if domestic migrant workers are paying the price for staying back in the country.

India: Thackeray declares assets worth Rs 143 crore, has no car

Mumbai, May 11 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, contesting his first election for a constitutional post, has declared that he and his family have assets worth Rs 143.26 crore, including movable and immovable property, but he does not own a car.

He has put liabilities at Rs 15.50 crore, including loans.
