Kanpur: Construction of proposed 20 MLD Common Effluent Treatment Plant at Wazidpur does not begin due to five thousand metric tonnes of sludge accumulated on the site. The Nagar Nigam has so far been able to remove merely ten thousand metric tonnes of sludge. Though it has employed its full manpower to complete the cleaning work.
This sludge was taken out from 130 MLD CETP and dumped at the proposed site for the new plant. The construction does not start without cleaning of the site.
Inspecting the area on Monday the Nagar Ayukt instructed the officials to speed up the sludge removal task so that the work could be started.
NN Zone Il executive engineer SK Singh clarified that the sludge was sending to Panki-based garbage disposal plant. The sludge has been dumped around villages like Sheikhpur and Jaina in Kanpur Dehat. The farmers of the two villages protested at the sludge dumping because of chromium in it. But Singh said this chemical element was not risky and sludge was downloaded due to soil erosion in the village areas.
The farmers pointed out that the yielding capacity of the land would be badly impacted by harmful chromium. The paddy crop would deteriorate, they specifically stated. However, their protest seemed to have fell on deaf ears.
It would be apt to mention here that a sum of Rs 419 crore rupees would be spent on the construct of new CETP in an area of 14 hectares.
