Thane, Mar 11 (PTI) A district court here sentenced a 32-year-old man to seven years' rigorous imprisonment for repeatedly raping a woman in Vikramgad taluka of Maharashtra's Palghar district.
In an order issued on February 6, district judge Rajesh S Gupta convicted Nitin Mere of offences registered under sections 376 (rape) and 417 (cheating) and sentenced him to seven years of rigorous imprisonment.
The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on the accused.
Prosecutor Rekha Hiwrale told the court that the victim and the accused worked at a construction site in Virar and were having an affair.
The accused repeatedly raped the victim between 2013 and 2014, after promising to marry her, she said.
However, when the victim later found out that Mere was planning to marry another girl, she felt cheated and lodged a police complaint, the prosecutor added.
