BRIDGETOWN, April 13 (NNN-Prensa Latina) — The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has convened a special summit for Wednesday to analyze the crisis created by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The meeting was convened by the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley, current president of the regional mechanism, which groups 15 countries in the region.
The main goal of the event is to exchange ideas and experiences on the ‘impact of the deadly virus,’ said the president.
The pandemic demonstrates the need to act in favor of deepening regional integration, as she pointed out when proposing the creation of a ‘common protocol of public health and a common border policy.’
Mottley called for materializing the CARICOM projects, including those related to a single market.
Likewise, she urged to take the response against Covid-19 ‘as a marathon and not as a sprint’ and to understand that the fight against the pandemic will be ‘long-winded.’
CARICOM is made up of Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Granada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Monserrat, Saint Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago, with Anguilla, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands, and the British Virgin Islands as associate members.
