07 Oct 2020; MEMO: A Palestinian prisoner in Israel is now in his 36th year behind bars, the Palestinian Prisoner Society (PPS) has revealed. Muhammad Altus from Jabaa in the Bethlehem governorate in the occupied West Bank, was arrested in 1985 for resisting the Israeli occupation as a member of Fatah.
The 65-year-old was shot and severely wounded when he was arrested and then sentenced to life in prison. He is now the third longest-serving Palestinian prisoner held by the Israeli occupation authorities.
According to the Wafa news agency, his wife died in 2015 after being in a coma for a year, and he has three children and nine grandchildren. They are denied permission to visit Altus because they are “second degree” relatives.
According to the PPS report, Altus is one of 26 Palestinians who have been in prison since before the signing of the Oslo Accords, including Karim Younis and Maher Younis, who have been detained since 1983. Israel is currently holding 51 Palestinians who have been in prison for over 20 years. As many as 541 prisoners are serving life sentences.
The report also pointed out that since 1967 as many as 222 Palestinians have died in prison. Hundreds more have died after their release as a direct result of medical negligence while in prison.
