16 Nov 2021; MEMO: Sudanese authorities have released Al Jazeera Media Network bureau chief in Khartoum, El Musalmi El Kabbashi, Al Jazeera reported this morning.
Sudanese authorities did not give a reason for El Kabbashi's detention in a night raid on his home, the news organisation said. He spent two days in prison.
Yesterday Al Jazeera reported that the Sudanese prosecution service had ordered the journalist's release but he was led by security services to Soba Prison instead.
El Kabbashi was detained after security forces fired live bullets and tear gas at anti-coup protesters in Khartoum and its twin city of Omdurman, killing at least eight people on Saturday, Al Jazeera said.
Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets across Sudan to protest against the military takeover carried out by General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, who reappointed himself as head of the ruling Sovereign Council.
Al Jazeera had condemned the detention of its correspondent in the "strongest terms", calling the military's action "reprehensible" and urging its journalists to be allowed to carry out their work unhindered.
