LATAM Airlines plane crashes on Peruvian runway, two firefighters dead

LIMA, Nov 18 (Reuters) - A LATAM Airlines (LTM.SN) jet collided with a firetruck on the runway as it was taking off from the airport in Peru's capital Lima on Friday, resulting in the death of two firefighters, the carrier said.

Peru's health ministry said at 7 p.m. (0000 GMT) that 20 passengers were being treated in a clinic, and at least two were in serious condition. The airline said no passengers or crew members were killed.

Thousands march in Peru, demanding resignation of leftist President Castillo

LIMA, Nov 5 (Reuters) - Thousands of people took to the streets across Peru on Saturday to demand the resignation of embattled President Pedro Castillo, a leftist whose government is under investigation for corruption.

Carrying the Andean nation's vertically striped red-white-red flag and signs with anti-government slogans, protesters marched towards the opposition-dominated Congress in the capital Lima.

Castillo has called those who oppose his government "reactionaries" and "the enemies of people".

Peru: Four tourists die, 16 injured in bus crash after Machu Picchu visit

LIMA, Aug 23 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Four tourists were killed and 16 injured after visiting Peru’s world-famous Machu Picchu site when the minibus they were traveling in crashed into a ravine, authorities said Monday.

Two of the dead tourists were Colombians, while the other two have yet to be identified, said the regional government of Cusco, where the ancient Inca citadel is located.

Amongst the injured were four French people, two Greeks, two Israelis, two Canadians, two Argentines, two Peruvians, a Dutch person and one more unidentified person.

Peru tops list of food insecure countries in the region: UN FAO

LIMA, Aug 22 (NNN-MERCOPRESS) — Peru has been singled out as the country with the highest rates in South America of people living under food insecurity, it was reported.

A study from the United Nations Office for Food and Agriculture (FAO) showed over half of Peru’s population was facing a situation “never before observed in the country,” where food insecurity affected 50.3% of the 32 million inhabitants.

Four Latin American nations back Castillo as Peru political crisis continues

LIMA, Aug 12 (Reuters) - The governments of Mexico, Argentina, Ecuador and Bolivia on Saturday backed the continuation of Pedro Castillo's presidency in Peru, where he is facing several criminal investigations and constant threats of impeachment.

"We reiterate our solidarity with the legitimately elected authorities," the countries said in a joint statement. "We trust that all (Peruvian) political actors will prioritize building broad consensus."

Peru's president calls on political parties to help create "broad-based" cabinet

LIMA, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Peruvian President Pedro Castillo on Thursday called on the country's political parties to help his government form a new "broad-based" cabinet, following the resignation of Anibal Torres as prime minister.

LIMA, May 22 (Reuters) - Peru's President Pedro Castillo shuffled his Cabinet on Sunday, including replacing the interior minister and the important mining minister amid rising tensions over protests in the world's second largest copper producing country.

Castillo has shuffled his ministerial team multiple times since coming into office in the middle of last year as he has battled against falling popularity, a hostile Congress, corruption probes and community tensions hitting mining.

Peru community wants its land back, threatening Chinese copper mine

Covid-19: New lineage of Omicron variant circulating in Peru

LIMA, May 8 (NNN-MERCOPRESS) — Peru’s Health Ministry officials reported this week the finding of a new lineage of the SARS.CoV-2 Omicron variant called BA.1.22.

“The new BA.1.22 lineage is a product of the natural evolution of the virus in the Peruvian population and has been identified mainly in the Tacna region, but cases have already been detected in Loreto, Arequipa, Moquegua, Puno, and Lima,” the ministry said in a statement.
