VALLETTA, May 11 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Malta’s ambassador to Finland has resigned after a Facebook post in which he compared German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Adolf Hitler, The Times of Malta reported.

“75 years ago we stopped hitler. Who will stop Angela merkel? She has fulfilled hitlers dream! To control Europe,” envoy Michael Zammit Tabona wrote in the post which has since been deleted.

The Maltese foreign ministry told him to remove the message and the diplomat, who served as ambassador to Finland since 2014, had resigned, the newspaper said Sunday.

16 Mar 2020; MEMO: A group of 112 African migrants was rescued from a sinking dinghy and landed in Malta early on Sunday, supervised by troops in special protective clothing against possible coronavirus infection, authorities said, Reuters reports.

The dinghy was spotted in Malta’s search and rescue region north of Libya on Saturday. Those on board included several women and children. The armed forces said the nationalities of those aboard was not immediately known.

VALLETTA, Feb 3 (NNN-Xinhua) — The Armed Forces of Malta rescued 47 migrants from rough seas between Malta and Libya and brought them to land on Sunday.

The meteorological situation is worsening as wind speeds pick up due to a low pressure system forming over Italy.

The rescue came after another group of 77 migrants was brought to Malta on Thursday.

VALLETTA, Jan 14 (NNN-XINHUA) – Robert Abela, the newly-elected leader of Malta’s Labour Party, was officially sworn in as Prime Minister on Monday, at a ceremony at the President’s Palace in Valletta.

Abela won the Labour leadership election early on Sunday, beating Deputy Prime Minister, Chris Fearne.

He replaces Joseph Muscat, who was forced to resign, over an investigation into the 2017 murder of journalist, Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Muscat resigned from his post shortly before Abela took his oath of office.

VALLETTA, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Close to 500 migrants who are being detained in a reception center in Malta had to be evacuated on Wednesday after a massive fire broke out here.

The fire, which created a large plume that could be seen from all over the island, broke out at around 1:00 p.m. local time. Sources said preliminary indications showed that the fire was not the result of a riot, but other sources said the fire broke out after an altercation between some of the detainees.

Testimony by the self-confessed middleman in the murder plan has linked people in the prime minister’s inner circle to attempts at a cover-up.
