Angolans go to polls to elect president, lawmakers

LUANDA, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Angolan voters are heading to polling stations Wednesday to elect the southern African country's new president as well as members of the National Assembly.

According to the National Electoral Commission (CNE), a total of 14.3 million voters have been registered and are expected to cast ballots in what's expected to be the most competitive election since 1992.

Angolan opposition leader says one-party state is 'big cancer' of society

LUANDA, Aug 21 (Reuters) - The leader of Angola's main opposition party UNITA accused the government on Sunday of establishing an undemocratic one-party state, and said contesting the result of this week's election was not off the table.

Angola is gearing up for a vote on Wednesday that is likely to be the tightest since the first multi-party election in 1992. The MPLA, of current President Joao Lourenco, has governed the country since it won independence from Portugal in 1975.

13 Dead, Three Seriously Injured In Vehicle Collision In Angola

HUAMBO, Angola, Jan 17 (NNN-IRIN) – At least 13 people died and three were seriously injured yesterday, as a result of a collision between two vehicles, in Angola’s central Huambo province.

According to a spokesman for the country’s National Police in Huambo, Martinho Kavita Satito, speeding and lack of prudence from the drivers were at the base of the collision.

The accident occurred around 12:30 p.m. when a Toyota HiAce van and a Kia Tourer collided head-on, in the road section Ussoque/Londuimbali.

Angolan authorities creating conditions for electoral registration overseas

LUANDA, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Angola is creating logistical conditions for the start of the electoral registration abroad, local authorities said Thursday.

The country's Minister of Territory Administration Marcy Lopes told the press that the preparation of the electoral registration of Angolans living overseas includes training of staff from diplomatic and consular missions who will be involved in the process.

Angola receives over 1 bln USD from IMF to combat COVID-19

LUANDA, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Angola has received over 1 billion U.S. dollars from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) with immediate access as part of the efforts to combat effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the country's Finance Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

The assistance is IMF's response to the call made by the international community on May 18 at the Paris Summit to mobilize a massive aid package to help countries, particularly African countries, address the sanitary crisis, the ministry said.

Covid-19: Serbia to donate 50,000 doses of vaccine to Angola

LUANDA, Aug 21 (NNN-Xinhua) — Serbia will donate at least 50,000 doses of Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine to Angola under an agreement signed Friday in Luanda between the two countries.

Russia’s Sputnik V is one of the five vaccine brands that are being administered in Angola, in parallel with AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer and Sinopharm.

Speaking at the ceremony, Serbian Foreign Minister Nikola Selakovic said that the donation is a gesture of friendship and fraternity towards the Angolan people.

Angolan leader urges lifting of arms embargo against Central African Republic

LUANDA, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Angola argued for the lifting of an arms embargo against the Central African Republic (CAR), according to a press release from the Angolan presidency distributed here.

The issue was raised by Angolan President Joao Lourenco during a UN session convened to discuss the security situation in the CAR, when he was speaking in his capacity as the acting president of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region.

Lourenco highlighted that the arms embargo has prevented the CAR from building up its armed forces for several years.

Angola extends state of emergency by another 15 days

LUANDA, April 24 (NNN-ANGOP) — Angola’s National Assembly (Parliament) approved the second extension of the 15-day State of Emergency in the country, as part of the effort to arrest the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The decision followed a petition from President João Lourenço for the purpose, which was unanimously backed by the Parliament.  

Pompeo blasts corruption, promotes U.S. business in Africa trip

LUANDA (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo denounced corruption and touted American business on Monday during the second leg of an African tour in Angola, where the government is seeking to claw back billions of dollars looted from state coffers.

Pompeo is aiming to promote U.S. investment as an alternative to Chinese loans while assuaging concerns over a planned U.S military withdrawal and the expansion of visa restrictions targeting four African countries.

Nearly 110 Million Square Metres Of Land Cleared Of Mines In Angola

CAXITO, Angola, Feb 2 (NNN-ANGOP) – More than 109.8 million square metres of land across Angola’s northern Bengo province, has been cleared of mines since 2006, said head of the provincial department of the National De-mining Institute (INAD).

For 2020, INAD expects to clear 500,000 square metres in Bengo province, Joao Francisco de Carvalho said, at the closing ceremony of a de-mining training programme in Caxito, the capital of the province.
