U.S. embassy in Tokyo warns of 'suspected racial profiling' by Japanese police

TOKYO, Dec 6 (Reuters) - The United States Embassy in Tokyo on Monday warned in a tweet of incidents of suspected racial profiling of non-Japanese by Japanese police.

Japan is a mostly ethnically homogeneous country where some people equate more immigrants with a rise in crime, although foreign labour is increasingly needed to make up for a declining and ageing population.

"The U.S. Embassy has received reports of foreigners stopped and searched by Japanese police in suspected racial profiling incidents. Several were detained, questioned, and searched," the tweet said.

Japan PM seeks to boost workers' wages, defence capability

Japan Considers Installing Security Cameras Mandatory On Trains, Following Attacks

TOKYO, Dec 3 (NNN-NHK) – The Japanese government is considering requiring railway operators across the country to install security cameras in newly built trains, following a knife attack inside a train in Tokyo in Oct, transport ministry officials said today.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, will study revising an ordinance on disaster prevention measures, that instructs operators to take safety measures to prevent fires, but so far, there are no requirements for security cameras.

Japan retracts new flight bookings ban after criticisms

TOKYO (AP) — Japan says it has retracted a ban on new incoming international flight bookings to defend against the new variant of the coronavirus only a day after the policy was announced, following criticisms that it was an overreaction.

The transport ministry on Wednesday issued a request to international airlines to stop taking new reservations for flights coming into Japan until the end of December as an emergency precaution to defend against the new omicron variant.

Japan confirms 1st case of Omicron variant of COVID-19

TOKYO, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Japan has confirmed the first case infected with the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 in the country, the Japanese government said Tuesday.

The infected person is a man in his 30s arriving from Namibia who tested positive for COVID-19 upon his arrival at the Narita international airport near Tokyo on Sunday.

The health ministry said the man had no symptoms when being at the airport but developed a fever on Monday, while two family members traveling with him have tested negative and are quarantined at a government-designated facility.

Japan bans entry of foreign visitors as omicron spreads

TOKYO (AP) — Japan announced Monday it will suspend entry of all foreign visitors from around the world as a new coronavirus variant spreads.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said the measure will take effect Tuesday.

The decision means Japan will restore border controls that it eased earlier this month for short-term business visitors, foreign students and workers.

Tepco finds melting of ice wall at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi plant

TOKYO, Nov 26 (Reuters) - Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco) (9501.T) will launch remedial works at the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant to strengthen an ice wall intended to halt the flow of groundwater after testing indicated partial melting.

The work could begin as early as the start of December, according to a presentation from the plant operator dated Thursday, part of a costly and troubled effort to secure the site following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
