India: Chavan questions removal of CBI director

Mumbai/Nagpur, Jan 10 (PTI) Maharashtra Congress president Ashok Chavan Thursday wondered if IPS officer Alok Verma was shunted out as CBI director as he allegedly was going to probe the Rafale jet deal.

Chavan asked what was it that the Narendra Modi government was so afraid of and said the move to remove Verma from the top post raised several questions.

India: Crop insurance as "big" a scam as Rafale: Uddhav

Beed (Maha), Jan 9 (PTI) Quoting a book, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday said the Centre's crop insurance scheme was "as big a scam" as the Rafale fighter jet deal.

Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's frequent foreign tours, he said mere speeches and announcements will not help the public, and demanded that the BJP-led government solve farmers' problems before looking at alliance talks for the forthcoming elections.

India: Man booked for molesting sister-in-law

Thane, Jan 7 (PTI) A 26-year-old man from Kalyan in Maharashtra's Thane district has been booked for allegedly molesting his sister-in-law, police said Monday.

The woman in her complaint stated that she was living in her mother-in-law's home as her husband was bedridden following a paralytic attack and was being nursed there, said an official.

At her mother-in-law's home, the accused made sexual advances towards her, the victim said in her complaint.

Nirav Modi says can't return to India for safety concerns

Mumbai, Jan 5 (PTI) Fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi, a prime accused in the PNB fraud case, told a court here Saturday that he cannot return to India due to safety concerns and also because his case has been politicised.

Modi's lawyer filed his reply to the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) plea seeking to declare the diamond merchant a fugitive under the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act (FEOA) before the special court for cases filed under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

India: Alok Nath gets anticipatory bail in rape case

Mumbai, Jan 5 (PTI) Actor Alok Nath, accused of rape by a woman writer-producer, was granted anticipatory bail by a Mumbai court on Saturday.

Additional Sessions Judge S S Oza granted the pre-arrest bail to Nath on a surety bond of Rs 5 lakh.

It means if the police arrest the actor, he will have to be released on bail after executing a bond.

A case of rape under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code was registered against Nath by the city police on November 21.

The complainant accused him of raping her 19 years ago.

Indian constitution will be in danger if BJP wins: Azad

Amaravati (Maha), Jan 4 (PTI) Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad on Friday appealed people to shun the BJP if they wanted to safeguard the Constitution.

Addressing a rally here, Azad, who was earlier denied permission to hold rallies in Pune and Mumbai, said voters should be wary of BJP's "misleading tactics".

"The fight in 2019 is between a paper tiger and a jungle tiger. They spread rumours that Azad has been bought...

but no currency can buy me," he said.

Indian police inspector who took Rs 22 lakh bribe suspended

Mumbai, Jan 3 (PTI) Police inspector Anand Bhoir, who was arrested by the ACB for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 22 lakh, was suspended Thursday, police said.

Bhoir, attached to the Crime Branch, and his driver were caught while allegedly accepting Rs 22 lakh in cash from a liquor shop owner Tuesday, an official said.

After the arrest, he was suspended from service and orders were issued by the office of the Commissioner of Police, he said.

Women human chain in Mumbai support Kerala 'Women's Wall'

Mumbai, Jan 2 :  Over 1,000 women formed a humanchain in Mumbai to express solidarity with the 'Women's Wall'formed in Kerala as part of an initiative to uphold genderequality amid the row over entry of females of certain ages inthe Sabarimala temple.

On Tuesday, over 35 lakh women stood shoulder-to-shoulder across the national highways in Kerala, creating a620 km-long human 'wall' from the northern end of Kasaragod tothe state's southern tip.

BJP ally Shiv Sena backs Oppn demand for JPC probe into Rafale

New Delhi, Jan 2 (PTI) BJP ally Shiv Sena Wednesday supported the Opposition demand in Lok Sabha for a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into the Rafale issue and drew a parallel with the alleged Bofors scam, claiming that people say Rafale aircraft is good but the deal is bad.

Speaking in a discussion on the Rafale issue, Arvind Sawant (SS) said the government speaks of transparency, then why it is rejecting the demand for a JPC probe.
