India: Businessman shot dead at home in U'khand

Kashipur (U'khand), Oct 13 (PTI) Two motorcycle-borne assailants shot dead a businessman at his home in Judka village in Udham Singh Nagar district on Thursday, police said.

The deceased, identified as Mahal Singh, was in the mining business.

CCTV footage showed the two assailants entering Singh's house and opening fire at him when he was reading a newspaper, the police said.

A business-related dispute with a Canada-based partner is suspected to be the cause of the murder, sources said.

India: Kedarnath yatra suspended amid heavy rains

Dehradun, May 23 (PTI) The Kedarnath yatra was suspended amid heavy rains on Monday with devotees en route to the shrine halted at various places between Gaurikund and Kedarnath, an official said.

Conscious of the 2013 Kedarnath deluge tragedy, the Rudraprayag district administration appealed to pilgrims to stay put at their respective stations till the weather improves, he said.

India: Daily cap on Char Dham pilgrims increased

Dehradun, May 11 (PTI) With a rush of pilgrims for the Char Dham Yatra, the daily limit imposed on the number of people visiting each of the shrines -- Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri -- in Uttarakhand has been increased by 1,000 for the first 45 days of the yatra season.

An earlier government order in this regard had been partially modified, increasing the limit to 16,000 for Badrinath, 13,000 for Kedarnath, 80,000 for Gangotri and 5,000 for Yamunotri, officials said on Wednesday.

India: The Kashmir Files' made tax free in Uttarakhand

Dehradun, Mar 16 (PTI) The Kashmir Files', a movie based on the atrocities against Kashmiri Pandits in the Valley, has been made tax free in Uttarakhand.

An order in this regard was issued on Tuesday by Additional Chief Secretary Manisha Panwar.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who had watched the movie on Monday night and praised it, had announced that the Chief Secretary has been asked to make it tax free.

Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Haryana, Goa and Tripura have also made the movie tax free.

India: Uttarakhand HC seeks govt's stand on Dharma Sansad case

Nainital, Feb 21 (PTI) The Uttarakhand High Court on Monday sought the state government's stand on the Haridwar Dharma Sansad case involving alleged inflammatory speeches made against Muslims.

Hearing the bail plea of Jitendra Narayan Tyagi alias Wasim Rizvi, Justice R C Khulbe asked the state government to clarify its stand on the issue before February 23, the next date of hearing of the bail plea.

India: Drunkards attack girl defying eve-teasing in Kanpur

Kanpur: In a shocking incident, a girl from Govind Nagar here, who protested against eve-teasing, was attacked by a few drunkards.

The miscreants also attacked the neighbour who came to rescue her.

She sustained severe head injuries after she was allegedly hit with a bottle on her head.

The Police has registered a case under sections 294,323, and 504 of the IPC.

Although the girl was assaulted by the accused, the FIR has been registered under sections of bailable offence and no section of molestation.

India: Over 65 per cent polling recorded in U'khand

Dehradun, Feb 14 (PTI) Over 65 per cent polling was recorded in Uttarakhand where voting to 70 assembly seats spread over 13 districts concluded peacefully, officials said here.

"Polling was held peacefully at the 11,697 polling booths across the state with 65.1 per cent of the electorate casting their votes till the close of polls," Chief Electoral Officer Saujanya who does not use a surname said.

This percentage of polling may be revised after tallying with the final data collected from polling parties, she said.

India: Poll campaigning ends in Uttarakhand

Dehradun, Feb 12 (PTI) Campaigning came to an end on Saturday for the 70 Assembly seats of Uttarakhand going to polls on February 14 with a host of star campaigners, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, holding a series of rallies in support of their party candidates.

India: Six BJP rebels expelled in Uttarakhand

Dehradun, Feb 4 (PTI) The BJP has expelled six rebels from the party in Uttarakhand, who had entered the fray as independents against its official nominees, for six years.

Those expelled include Rudrapur MLA Rajkumar Thukral, Tika Prasad Maikhuri, Mahaveer Singh Rangad, Jitendra Negi, Dhirendra Chauhan and Manoj Shah, Pradesh BJP media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said.

Their expulsion follows the failure of the BJP leadership to persuade them to withdraw from the fray in favour of the party's official nominees.

India: Dhami, Khattar launch BJP's poll campaign in Uttarakhand

Dehradun, Feb 1 (PTI) Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and his Haryana counterpart Manohar Lal Khattar on Tuesday launched the BJP's election campaign in the state, going door-to-door to meet voters and addressing public meetings in Garhwal and Kumaon regions respectively.

Though the BJP has been conducting door-to-door campaigns and virtual poll meetings in Uttarakhand for quite some time, the party's state election in-charge Pralhad Joshi had said at a press conference here on January 30 that it would formally begin its poll campaign from February 1.
