India: BJP MLA, wife booked for alleged real estate fraud

New Delhi, Jan 5 (PTI) The economic offences wing of the Delhi Police has registered an FIR against BJP's Kanpur (Dehat) MLA Vinod Katiyar and his wife for alleged cheating, criminal breach of trust and duping of real estate customers of crores of rupees, officials said Saturday.

Katiyar is also a director of the AVP Buildetch, Noida, they said.

Dry ATMs in India: Par panel nudges RBI to fix the problem

New Delhi, Jan 6 (PTI) A parliamentary panel has asked the Reserve Bank to address the problem of perpetually dysfunctional ATMs so as to avoid any situation of forced cash crunch.

The Standing Committee on Finance has also asked banks to install adequate number of ATMs. The panel tabled its report in Parliament last week.

As per a data of RBI, there were 2,21,492 Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) in the country as at September-end 2018.

India: UPSIC to help LLR in nurses' recruitment

KANPUR: Paucity of nurses will settle soon in the Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital and its associated hospitals here. There has been decided to recruit as many as 150 Para-medical staff through outsourcing. The UPSIC will extend its complete support. So far a total of 143 staff nurses have been providing their services in the Hallet and its associated hospitals. Their scarcity sometimes causes a problem to the patients for even taking an injection.

Authorities order culling of poultry birds in India's Bihar following bird flu outbreak

NEW DELHI, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- The local government in India's eastern state of Bihar Friday ordered culling of over 15,000 poultry birds following confirmation of bird flu, officials said.

The orders were given by department of animal husbandry in Munger district, about 179 km east of Patna, the capital city of Bihar.

7 dead as LPG blast in Delhi triggers building collapse

New Delhi January 04, PTI: Seven people were killed after an LPG cylinder blast in a building, where work related to ceiling fans was being carried out, in West Delhi's Sudarshan Park triggered a collapse bringing a portion of the structure down, police said.

The fire department received a call about the collapse at around 8.48pm on Thursday and eight fire tenders, along with ambulances, were rushed to the spot, they said.

Lokpal search committee: SC asks Centre for affidavit on action since Sept 2018

New Delhi, Jan 4 (PTI) The Supreme Court Friday directed the Centre to place on affidavit steps taken since September last year to set up a search committee for the Lokpal.

The apex court asked Attorney General K K Venugopal to file the affidavit on the matter by January 17.

"You have to ensure on affidavit the steps taken on the issue of setting up of a search committee for the Lokpal," a bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice S K Kaul said.

Criminal investigation for Rafale scam if Cong in power: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, Jan 4 (PTI) Congress president Rahul Gandhi Friday said if his party comes to power in 2019, a criminal investigation will be launched into the Rafale deal and the accused will be punished.

Speaking to the media outside Parliament ahead of the government's reply, he urged Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to answer the questions raised by the Congress on the multi-million dollar fighter jet deal.

Congress can not insult Indian prime minister, says Nirmala

New Delhi, Jan 4 (PTI) There were heated scenes in the Lok Sabha as Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman accused the Congress and its president Rahul Gandhi of insulting her and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"Nobody has a right to call me or the prime minister a thief and a liar," said a visibly angry Sitharaman, whom speaker Sumitra Mahajan tried to calm down.

The defence minister was responding to Gandhi who said that he wanted to speak as his name was taken by Sitharaman during her reply to a debate on Rafale deal.
