India: Kanpur Police ready to scan speculators before counting

Kanpur: Although the state assembly polls counting will be done tomorrow, the betting has reported to have begun in the city.

Even the police have also come to know of the betting which has led them to issue advice to surveillance cell.

As the news go, one bet of Rs ten thousand can reportedly fetch a benefit of the amount at three thousand if the gamblers try the luck on the Samajwadi Party.

It is thus obvious that the SP has been acquiring the highest rate. It this goes up to three-fold in the market.

India: UP elections; Day before counting, SP alleges EVM 'tampering'

Lucknow, Mar 9 (PTI) A day before the counting of votes in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party on Wednesday alleged that EVMs were being tampered with and party workers increased their vigil outside the strongroom where the machines are kept.

On its Twitter handle, the SP uploaded a video clip of an official who had admitted that protocol had not been followed while transporting the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) on Tuesday. However, in the 45 seconds-long video, the official also ruled out the possibility of tampering with the EVMs.

India: Share markets fall for fifth straight session on weak global trends, oil prices

Mumbai, Mar 8 (PTI) Equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty fell for the fifth straight session on Tuesday in tandem with weak global trends as simmering tensions between Russia and Ukraine kept investors on the sidelines.

The 30-share BSE Sensex opened on a weak note and further tumbled 432.36 points or 0.81 per cent to 52,410.39 amid firming oil prices and relentless selling by foreign institutional investors.

Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty declined 115.75 points or 0.72 per cent to 15,747.40 in opening trade.

India: Surveys don't matter, we'll get over 300 seats: Akhilesh

Lucknow, Mar 7 (PTI) Dismissing pre-poll surveys that showed that the BJP had the edge in Uttar Pradesh elections, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday claimed that the ruling party will be wiped out from the state when the results are declared on March 10.

"Let them show whatever they have got. We are winning with a majority," he said, dismissing predictions earlier on some TV channels.

India: Hyderabad is AP's capital till 2024, says Minister

Amaravati, March 7 (PTI) The Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy government on Monday stirred up a new row, saying Hyderabad is the capital of Andhra Pradesh till 2024.

The principal opposition Telugu Desam Party launched a counter-offensive asking the ruling party to shift base to Hyderabad and rule from there if it is the state capital.

The row comes in the backdrop of the March 3 verdict of the AP High Court that said the state Legislature 'lacked competence' to make any legislation for shifting, bifurcating or trifurcating the capital.

No safe corridor for students stranded in Ukrainian city of Sumy: India tells UNSC

United Nations, Mar 8 (PTI) India, which has managed to safely bring back over 20,000 of its nationals from Ukraine amid the ongoing war, has said that it is deeply concerned that despite its repeated urgings to both Russia and Ukraine, the safe corridor for Indian students stranded in the eastern Ukrainian city of Sumy did not materialise.

Indian Rupee slumps 81 paise to 76.98 against US dollar in early trade

Mumbai, Mar 7 (PTI) The rupee declined 81 paise to 76.98 against the US dollar in opening trade on Monday as intensifying geopolitical risks due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict pushed investors to the safe-haven appeal of the greenback.

Forex traders said escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine kept crude oil prices at an elevated level and heightened worries about domestic inflation and wider trade deficits.

Besides, sustained foreign fund outflows and a lacklustre trend in domestic equities also weighed on investor sentiment.

India: Woman found dead in UP village, rape suspected

Chitrakoot (UP), Mar 6 (PTI) A 20-year-old woman was found dead on Sunday in a village in Mau area here, with police suspecting that she was raped before being killed.

Superintendent of Police Dhawal Jaiswal said injury marks on the woman's neck suggested that she was strangulated.

The woman was missing since Saturday evening, he said, adding that some persons have been detained in connection with the case.

Prima facie the woman was raped and killed, Jaiswal said.
