Turkiye’s Erdogan opposes ECOWAS's decision to intervene militarily in Niger

22 August 2023; MEMO: Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has opposed the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) decision to intervene militarily against the coup leaders in Niger, warning that it would lead to instability in Africa. 

Ankara evacuates more than 1,200 people as Greece wildfires spread to Turkiye

24 August 2023; MEMO: Nine villages and more than 1,200 people have been evacuated as wildfires, raging in Greece, spread to neighbouring Turkiye, local media reports.

According to the report, the wildfires raging in Greece are also affecting neighbouring border province of Canakkale in Turkiye.

More than 1,500 hectares have burned, and 48 people had to be treated for smoke intoxication.

Pakistan, Saudi Arabia begin joint Special Forces drill

24 August 2023; MEMO: Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday, began AL BATTAR-I, a Special Forces joint drill, to enhance bilateral relations and learn from each other’s experiences, Anadolu Agency reports.

Senior officials from the two Armed Forces attended the opening ceremony, which took place in north-western Pakistan’s Nowshera district.

Turkiye accelerates reconstruction of earthquake-ravaged region

24 August 2023; MEMO: Turkiye has mobilised all resources to rebuild the earthquake-ravaged region, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday, Anadolu Agency reports.

Erdogan spoke at the ground-breaking ceremony in Turkiye’s Adiyaman province via live video link from the Presidential Complex in the capital, Ankara.

Adiyaman is one of 11 cities hit by severe twin earthquakes on 6 February. 

Israel arrests Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad members in West Bank

RAMALLAH/GAZA, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli army Wednesday arrested 20 Palestinians, including members of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in the West Bank, a Palestinian association said.

In a statement sent to Xinhua, the Palestinian Prisoner's Club Association, a non-government organization, said that Israeli army forces stormed dozens of houses in the West Bank cities of Ramallah, Jenin, Nablus and Hebron.

UAE: Iran sentences 8 to prison over paramilitary’s death during last year’s nationwide protests

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran sentenced seven men and a woman to prison after their convictions over allegedly aiding two men who were earlier executed for killing a paramilitary volunteer during the nationwide protests last year that followed Mahsa Amini’s death in police custody, state media reported Wednesday.

The sentences come just ahead of the one-year anniversary of Amini’s Sept. 16 death, as authorities have been rounding up activists and others in an apparent attempt to tamp down on any dissent ahead of it.
