Covid-19: Syria government ‘prepares for virus second wave’

DAMASCUS, Oct 16 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The Syrian government has set up a temporary hospital for Covid-19 patients at a Damascus sports complex in preparation for what an official said was a possible second wave.

The facility at Al-Faiha Stadium will operate 120 beds for people requiring oxygen, but has capacity for 100 more.

The health ministry has reported 4,774 cases of Covid-19 and 228 deaths in government-held areas since March.

However, experts believe the actual figures are significantly higher.

Iran ready to help settle dispute between Azerbaijan, Armenia – FM Zarif

TEHRAN, 0ct 16 (NNN-IRNA) — Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in a telephone conversation with his Azeri counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov on Thursday voiced his country’s readiness to help achieve sustainable peace and solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh region dispute within the framework of a regional initiative by Iran, Turkey and Russia, and the Minsk Group.

During the phone talk, the Azeri foreign minister elaborated on the latest battlefield developments in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Turkish police arrest 14 Daesh suspects in Istanbul

ISTANBUL, Oct 16 (NNN-Xinhua) — Turkish police detained 14 people in Istanbul over their suspected links to the Daesh militant group, local media reported on Friday.

Police launched simultaneous operations in 17 locations across Turkey’s largest city to capture the suspects, who were believed to have financially supported the Daesh, the state-run Anadolu Agency said.

It added that those targeted in the operations were recruiting personnel for the group.

Several fake passports, digital materials, and cash were seized in the raids.

Israel government mulls reducing salaries of officials, including PM

16 Oct 2020; MEMO: The Israeli government is reviewing a proposal to reduce the salaries of senior officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in the wake of the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic, Israeli Walla news site reported.

According to the proposal, the reduction will be temporary until the end of 2021.

Iran and US to conclude prisoner swap deal ahead of US elections

16 Oct 2020; MEMO: Iran and the US will reach a new deal to exchange prisoners ahead of the US presidential elections slated for November, the Jadeh Iran news site reported.

The site quoted sources stating that the deal would also include freeing $7 billion of Iran’s frozen funds by Washington.

Pompeo persuades Saudi Arabia to normalise ties with Israel

16 Oct 2020; MEMO: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has urged Saudi Arabia to follow in the footsteps of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain to normalise diplomatic ties with Israel.

Meeting Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal Bin Farhan in Washington on Wednesday, Pompeo claimed it would be a strategic boost for the Jewish state amid normalisation with two other Gulf Arab kingdoms.
