Egypt to prosecute some 54 million who boycotted Senate vote

Cairo, Aug 27 (AP) Egypt's election commission said Wednesday it would refer to prosecutors about 54 million people who did not vote in elections earlier this month for two-thirds of the Senate, the upper and mainly powerless chamber of the country's Parliament.

The development is unlikely to lead to actual trials as Egypt's judiciary does not have the financial means needed to prosecute such a large majority of the voters.

UAE: Pompeo meets Oman's Sultan on last leg of Mideast tour

DUBAI (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met the Sultan of Oman on Thursday as part of a Middle East tour following a U.S.-brokered deal on normalising relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.

In a meeting with Sultan Haitham bin Tariq al-Said, Pompeo said on Twitter he discussed “the importance of building regional peace, stability, and prosperity through a united Gulf Cooperation Council”.

Sultan Haitham took power in January after Sultan Qaboos bin Said died after a half century at the helm of the Gulf country.

Canada ready to join Lebanon blast probe if credible and transparent

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Canada has offered to join Lebanon’s investigation into this month’s seismic Beirut port blast but under conditions that ensure a credible and transparent probe that “gets to the bottom of things”, the visiting foreign minister said on Thursday.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun initially promised a swift investigation into why highly explosive material stored unsafely for years detonated on Aug. 4, killing at least 180 people and injuring some 6,000, but later said the process would take time.

Turkey not to compromise in East Mediterranean dispute: Erdogan

ANKARA, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday that his country will defend its right of hydrocarbon explorations in the Eastern Mediterranean and make "no concessions."

"Turkey has no intentions on anyone's land, sovereignty or interests, but it will not make concessions on its rights," the Turkish leader said at an event in Mus, eastern Turkey, according to semi-official Anadolu Agency.

Ethiopia PM arrives in Khartoum to strengthen relations

26 Aug 2020; MEMO: Ethiopia’s Prime Minister, Abi Ahmed, arrived in Sudan yesterday on a one-day visit aimed at strengthening relations between the two countries, the official Sudanese News Agency (SUNA) reported.

SUNA said Ahmed was received at Khartoum airport by his Sudanese counterpart, Abdullah Hamdok.

Israel orders Palestinian village demolish its only road

26 Aug 2020; MEMO: Israeli occupation authorities have ordered a road in the village of Kaisan, east of the occupied West Bank city of Bethlehem, to be razed, Al-Watan Voice reported yesterday.

Deputy-Mayor of Kisan village, Ahmed Ghazal, said that the Israel occupation authorities are planning to close the road which connects more than ten homes to the village.

Ghazal said that this road was paved in 2007 to serve the villagers, who have been subject to Israeli harassment for decades.

Lebanon rejects Israel push to reform UNIFIL peacekeeping force

26 Aug 2020; MEMO: Lebanon yesterday rejected an Israeli-led push to make reforms to the UNIFIL peacekeeping force which patrols the UN-demarcated Blue Line separating the countries who are technically still at war.

The latest call for reforming the peacekeeping force comes only days before the UN Security Council is set to vote on whether to renew the UNIFIL mandate on 31 August.
