Algerian president decries crimes of French colonialism

21 Aug 2020; MEMO: Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Thursday said that the French colonization of his country resulted in “crimes against humanity”, according to the official Algeria Press Service, Anadolu Agency reports.

This came in a speech to the Algerian people on Muhajid Day, which commemorates the veterans of the War of Independence.

Netanyahu intends to visit UAE before end of 2020

21 Aug 2020; MEMO: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday he intends to visit the United Arab Emirates (UAE) before the end of 2020, Anadolu reports.

“I intend to visit you soon, during this year,” Netanyahu told Jewish community leaders in the UAE via the Zoom application, according to a statement issued by his office.

Two Iraqi Women Shot Dead In Southern Iraq

BAGHDAD, Aug 20 (NNN-NINA) — Two Iraqi women were shot dead yesterday, by unidentified gunmen, in Iraq’s southern city of Basra, a local security source said.

The attack took place in the afternoon, when gunmen opened fire from their assault rifles, on a sport utility vehicle (SUV), carrying four women, in a commercial street in Basra, some 550 km south of Baghdad.

Israeli forces kill Palestinian in West Bank, military says he was planning attack

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli soldiers fired at Palestinians suspected of preparing to attack Israeli cars in the occupied West Bank on Thursday, the military said, and Palestinian officials said a Palestinian teenager was killed.

A military spokeswoman said members of a “terrorist squad” were hit by the gunfire but she had no details on their condition.

Palestinian health and municipal officials said Mohammad Damer Hamdan, 16, was killed by Israeli forces and two other Palestinians were wounded. The Hamas Islamist militant group issued a statement mourning his death.

Fatah, Hamas hold joint protest against UAE-Israel deal

Palestine’s top political groups Fatah and Hamas on Wednesday slammed the UAE-Israel deal as a “stab in the back and an obliteration of the [Palestinian] cause,” Anadolu reports.

Iran: Rouhani thanks countries that opposed US resolution to extend arms embargo

20 Aug 2020; MEMO: Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has thanked the countries that abstained or voted against a draft resolution prepared by the United States to extend the UN arms embargo on Iran due to expire in October, IRNA news agency reported.

The agency said Rouhani expressed, during a cabinet meeting yesterday, his gratitude to the 11 countries that abstained from voting on the US draft resolution, in particular “the two friendly countries, Russia and China,” who voted against the decision.

Turkey sends military reinforcements into Syria’s Idlib

20 Aug 2020; MEMO: Turkey has sent military reinforcements into the Idlib governorate in northern Syria, following escalation by the Syrian regime of President Bashar Al-Assad and Russia in the region.

According to media reports, the Turkish army reinforcements entered through the Kafrlossin border crossing, north of Idlib, and included tanks and heavy artillery in addition to various military vehicles.
