Qatar sends first batch of aid to Iran to combat corona

17 Mar 2020; MEMO: Qatar has announced sending the first batch of urgent medical aid to Iran to help it contain the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

A statement issued by the Qatar Fund for Development on Twitter said: “The first package of aid included about six tons of medical equipment and supplies, including surgical masks, sterilisers, and medical disinfectants.”

Saudi Arabia suspends work in government agencies over corona

17 Mar 2020; MEMO: Saudi Arabia announced on Sunday the suspension of employees’ attendance at all government workplaces for a period of 16 days starting yesterday as a precautionary measures against the spread of the coronavirus, the Saudi News Agency reported.

The Saudi government’s decision does not include those working in the health, security and educational sectors.

Leader at Iran’s Assembly of Experts dies from coronavirus

17 Mar 2020; MEMO: Representative of the people in Tehran at the Iranian Assembly of Experts, Ayatollah Hashem Bathaei-Golpaygani, died of the coronavirus yesterday morning, local media reported.

Seventy-eight-year-old Bathaei-Golpaygani was reported to have lost his life at Tehran’s Shahid Beheshti Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for the novel coronavirus.

The Assembly of Experts is a body that supervises and appoints the Supreme Leader of Iran.

Flydubai temporarily suspends services to India

Mumbai, Mar 17 (PTI) Gulf airline flydubai has temporarily suspended its services to India for a month due to travel and visa restrictions in the wake of coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak.

The pandemic is adversely impacting the airline industry world over with carriers cancelling or cutting down services across their international network.

UN report calls for political mission in Darfur

17 March 2020; AFP: A joint UN-African Union report released Monday on Sudan and Darfur called for a political mission to replace the peace operation there, raising fears by rights groups that civilians could lose all protection.

The United Nations Security Council will meet on March 26 to decide whether or not to gradually withdraw by the end of October some 7,800 troops, known as the "Blue Helmets," from the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID).

Little-known ex-governor Zurfi named as new Iraqi prime minister-designate

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq’s president designated Adnan al-Zurfi, a former regional governor with little national political profile, as prime minister, tasked with forming a government within 30 days in a bid to overcome months of unrest and political deadlock.

Zurfi, who served as governor of the predominantly Shi’ite Najaf province during the U.S. occupation after the fall of Saddam Hussein, is head of the small Nasr parliamentary group of former prime minister Haider al-Abadi, a U.S. ally.

Israel imposes cyber-monitoring of coronavirus cases

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel invoked emergency regulations on Tuesday to deploy cyber monitoring in the battle against the coronavirus, saying halting its spread outweighed concerns about the invasion of privacy.

The move will provide the government with cellular data to retrace the movements of people infected by the virus and locate and alert those who had been in their vicinity.

Israeli-U.S. consortium launched for developing water-energy tech

JERUSALEM, March 16 (Xinhua) -- Ben Gurion University (BGU) in southern Israel announced Monday the initiation of a consortium, led by BGU and Northwestern University in the U.S. state of Illinois, for the development of new technologies to solve global water challenges.

The multi-institutional international program, called the Collaborative Water-Energy Research Center, has a total budget of 21.4 million U.S. dollars.

Palestine submits memo over ICC jurisdiction on occupied areas

RAMALLAH, March 16 (Xinhua) -- Palestine on Monday submitted "observations" to the International Criminal Court (ICC) on its jurisdiction on occupied territories, according to the Palestinian Foreign Ministry.

The submission is in response to the ICC prosecutor's request for determining the scope of its territorial jurisdiction in Palestinian areas.

Palestine is the sole sovereign over the territories occupied in 1967, comprised of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, the ministry said in a statement.
