JERUSALEM (AP) — As host of this year’s Eurovision, Israel has tried to use the hugely popular song contest to present itself as a tolerant and cosmopolitan country that is winning increased acceptance on the world stage. But despite Israel’s best branding efforts, the kitschy festival is clouded in political conflict and controversy.

Over 90 kilograms of heroin seized in eastern Turkey

VAN, 12 May 2019; AA: Gendarmerie forces impounded 91 kilograms heroin in Turkey's eastern Van province, according to a statement Sunday.

The statement said the heroin was seized in Ipekyolu district from the back of a truck which was carrying cattle.

Three people were arrested in connection with the illegal drug.

Syrian army reaches Idlib border - TV

MOSCOW, May 11. /TASS/: The Syrian military forces have liberated five settlements in the northwest of Syria from terrorists on Saturday, reaching the administrative border between the provinces of Idlib and Hama, the Al Mayadeen TV channel informed.

According to the channel, the Syrian fighters had managed to destroy a command center and several warehouses belonging to the Jabhat al-Nusra terror group (outlawed in Russia).

11 May 2019; MEMO: A senior Iranian cleric said in a Friday prayers sermon that the United States’ navy fleet could be “destroyed with one missile”, as a US aircraft carrier headed to the Gulf, the semi-official news agency ISNA reported -says Reuters.

The carrier Abraham Lincoln, deployed by President Donald Trump’s administration to the Middle East as a warning to Iran, passed through Egypt’s Suez Canal on Thursday, the Suez Canal Authority said.

Turkey to launch miniature satellites in 2020

ANKARA; 11 May 2019; AA: Turkey will launch two miniature satellites to space next year, according to a Turkish defense technology company.

STM Defense Technology and Engineering Company aims to develop small satellites, Elif Dirgin, the director of the satellite systems, said at an International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF).

Ergin said the company have already initiated two satellites projects to build a microsatellite named Lagari and a nanosatellite.

Turkey's auto production nearly 490,000 in Jan-April

ANKARA; 11 May 2019; AA: A total of 489,429 vehicles rolled off Turkish automotive industry production lines in the first four months of this year, the Automotive Manufacturers Association (OSD) said on Saturday.

The country's auto production -- including automobiles, commercial vehicles, and tractors -- fell 13% year-on-year in January-April period.

The association said automobile production in Turkey also fell 14% to reach at 322,281 during the same period.

Heavy airstrikes, shelling target rebel positions in Syria's Hama, Idlib

DAMASCUS, May 11 (Xinhua): Heavy airstrikes and shelling targeted rebel positions in the northern countryside of Hama province and the nearby countryside of Idlib province on Saturday as part of an ongoing Russian-backed campaign, a war monitor reported.

The Russian and Syrian warplanes started the 12th day of escalation with airstrikes and ground shelling on rebel positions in northern Hama and the southern countryside of Idlib, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The Britain-based watchdog group said that the airstrikes renewed after midnight Saturday.
