Turkish air space closed to planes carrying troops from Russia to Syria

24 April 2022; MEMO: Turkish air space has been closed to military and civilian planes carrying troops from Russia to Syria after consultation with Moscow, Turkey's state broadcaster TRT Haber cited Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu as saying on Saturday.

Reuters reported that NATO member Turkey has good relations with both Russia and Ukraine and has sought to mediate in the war between them.

Iran closes Afghan border crossing after skirmishes with Taliban

24 April 2022; MEMO: The main border crossing between Iran and Afghanistan was closed on Saturday following skirmishes between Iranian border guards and the Taliban forces, Anadolu Agency reported.

According to official sources, Taliban authorities in the Islam Qala district of western Afghanistan's Herat province were paving a road in the border zone with Iran, which was obstructed by Iranian border guards.

Palestine: Holy Fire lights up Jerusalem's Holy Sepulchre

24 April 2022; MEMO: With processions, chants and ululations, thousands of Christian Palestinians and pilgrims celebrated the Holy Fire ceremony at Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Saturday, the first to be held since Israel imposed new restrictions on attendance.

Citing public safety, Israeli authorities sought to limit participation to 1,700 worshippers, a move criticised by church leaders as an infringement of the right to freedom of worship. It was subsequently increased to 4,000.

Iran’s IRGC Vows Avenge Soleimani’s Assassination

TEHRAN, Apr 23 (NNN-IRNA) – Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), vowed to take revenge on the assassination of Qassem Soleimani, former commander of its IRGC Quds Force, Press TV reported yesterday.

“They (Americans) constantly send messages saying they will offer rewards and remove certain sanctions if we give up seeking revenge for Soleimani,” Alireza Tangsiri, commander of the naval unit of the IRGC, was quoted as saying.

Gaza Fires Two Rockets Towards Israel As Tensions Rise

JERUSALEM, Apr 23 (NNN-WAFA) – Two rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip towards Israel last night, with no damage or injury reported, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said.

One rocket landed in southern Israel in open territory and the other within the Gaza Strip, according to the IDF.

The incident came after a tense day in Jerusalem, where the Palestinians and the Israeli police clashed again, at the holy site of the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Several rockets were fired into Israel from Gaza throughout the week after several months of quiet.

At Least 45 PKK Members Killed In Turkey’s New Cross-Border Operation In N. Iraq

ISTANBUL, Apr 23 (NNN-ANADOLU) – At least 45 members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) have been killed, during Turkey’s new ground and air cross-border operation in northern Iraq, said Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, yesterday.

The operation also killed three Turkish soldiers, added Erdogan.

The “destruction of caves and other critical targets” in the region is still underway, the president noted, hoping that the operation will be “successfully completed with minimum loss.”

Omani Delegation Arrives In Yemen To Mediate Peace Process

SANAA, Apr 23 (NNN-ONA) – A delegation from Oman arrived in Yemen yesterday, to convince the Houthi group, to engage in a peace process with the Yemeni government.

“The Omani delegation would meet with top leaders of the Houthis, amid efforts to lift the blockade and end the war,” the Houthi-run al-Masirah TV reported, without providing details.

Yemen’s warring sides agreed to implement from Apr 2 a UN-brokered cease-fire, that was meant to last two months.

Iran says talks with regional rival Saudi Arabia resumed in Baghdad

April 23 (Reuters) - Rival regional powers Iran and Saudi Arabia resumed talks in the Iraqi capital after they were suspended in March, Iran's semi-official Nour News reported on Saturday.

There was no confirmation from Saudi Arabia or Iraq on the resumption of the talks.

"The latest positive meeting has raised hopes for the two countries to take steps toward the resumption of ties,” said Nour News, which is affiliated with the country's Supreme National Security Council. It did not say when the fifth round of talks were held.
