Kanpur: The government is hell-bent upon improving the quality of water flowing into the river Ganga. Despite its true intentions, the industrial effluents mar the efforts of clean and clear Ganga.
Though there exists a national clean Ganga mission the actions appear smaller before the unbridled discharge of untreated wastes mixing with the water in the rivers.
The NGT and Central Pollution Control Board are devoted to its respective goals but some more steps are still needed. To make the Ganga cleaner at least in this tannery town, the Biochemical Engineering Department of HBTU has been entrusted with the task of examining as many as 40 tanneries.
Prof Brajesh Tripathi has been assigned the responsibility of this duty. He cleared that it would take at least one year to examine the nature of contamination being committed by the tanneries. This test would be undertaken at different levels, he added.
The CPCB would lend its full support to the HBTU in conducting tests. There remains the main focus on maintaining the BOD level in the river water. Contaminated water contains chemical which endangers aquatic creatures.
