KANPUR: Enraged traders expressed disapproval at the driver’s harassment at the Pheelkhana police station here on Tuesday. They were resenting at the detention of a sweets shop’s loader driver who was unloading goods in Naughada Cloth Market area on Monday evening.
They staged a sit-in and recited the religious manuscript Hanuman Chalisa. Following an assurance by the City Magistrate of strict action against the policemen, they ended their agitation.
The policemen charged the loader driver of causing a traffic jam by parking his four-wheeler in the middle of the road. They even seized his loader at the police station. The driver was released on bail and the vehicle was also unconfined later.
The traders said they would meet the senior superintendent of police apprising him of their grievance.
According to the reports two policemen had gone to get sweets at a shop a week ago on Birhana Road. The shopkeeper refused to provide sweets for free. Annoyed policemen apprised the shop owner of Inspector's order. But the shop-owner kept on asking money to sell sweets.
When the owner approached the police station he faced rude behaviour from the police. He then contacted Vinod Gupta, general secretary, Kanpur Udyog Vyapar Mandal, who organised the demonstration.
