India: Locals wade through dirty pond to garland Dr Ambedkar

Kanpur: Local people waded through a dirty pond to garland the Dalit icon's statue in the city's Juhi Bamburahiya on the auspicious occasion of the 131st birth anniversary of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar.

Dr Ambedkar's statue was reported to be erected in the middle of the pond for the past several years. There remained no attempt to remove to a better spot up to the day.

Every year on Ambedkar jayanti, the local councillor and his supporters have to brave the stench of the dirty water to lay wreaths and garland the statue of Dr Ambedkar.

According to the local people and the Councillor of the area, several complaints have been made to the officials regarding the dirty pond, but there has been initiated no action as reported.

The Councillor says that he has complained many times regarding this matter, but till date no officer has taken care of it.

"It is ironic that every year, Ambedkarji's statue is being treated like this amid filth and dirty water," the Councillor told.
